Calico is an old West mining town that has been around since 1881 and was abandoned in the mid-1890s after silver lost its value. The town that once gave miners a good living lost its hustle and became a “ghost town.”

Some structures still stand dating back to the town's operational years: Lil's Saloon; the town office; the former home of Lucy Lane, which is now the main museum but was originally the town's post office and courthouse; Smitty's Gallery; the general store; and Joe's Saloon.

Nearby, a miner panning for gold leaves you wondering how his pan keeps filling with water (but never gold). The eight-minute journey on the Calico Mine Ride is now peppered with about 50 animatronic miners that show up in small scenes as the train travels through the tight confines of the mine.

Calico Ghost Town offers a variety of trails for off-roading. All ATV's, dirt bikes, buggies, and UTV's are allowed at the Calico trails. The Pirate Cove Resort at Moabi offers rentals for off-roading and offers over 3,200 Miles of BLM-approved designated trails.

But in the spring of 1883, many of the local miners left Calico when borax was discovered three miles east at Borate. Later the same year, a fire destroyed much of the camp, but Calico again boomed in 1884 as additional silver discoveries were made.

At an elevation of 2,283 feet, this dry, dusty, mountainous town grew and by 1892, there were over 60 mines in the area. These mines produced $20 million worth of silver and $9 million in borate minerals before they were exhausted in the mid-1890s. At one time, Calico had a population of several thousand.

Ghost Town is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for some strong language, sexual humor and drug references. The use of two strong sexual expletives and a host of other profanities, sexual innuendos and crude nicknames are an unfortunate distraction from this lively story about ghosts.

Alcohol is only allowed in your overnight camp site and you may also consume alcohol from a vessel. All traffic laws apply in the park as they are state roadways. Our speed limits are low for the safety of bicyclists, pedestrians, and children in the park.

You ride in a bit of history while taking a 5/8-mile journey around the park. Enter the Train Depot through the entrance. A conductor will direct the guest to a seat. This attraction is wheelchair accessible unless the Galloping Goose is in operation.

After that discovery, the population grew to over 3,000 in Calico. That was a decent size town during the 1890s.

Please use common sense when shooting. Shooting is not allowed in Calico Regional Park or Odessa Canyon (1st large canyon east of Calico Ghost Town campground). Shooting is allowed in all other parts of the Calico Mountains. It is illegal to shoot across any road or trail or from any vehicle.
