Great movie that holds up, but too violent, profane, and intense for younger kids. Take the PG-13 rating seriously.

There is a reason it was the most popular film of its year and is still considered a classic over 30 years later. The acting from the late Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg is all incredible. This movie has everything you could want a movie to have. While guys may be quick to dismiss this as a chick flick, think twice this is a romance movie but there are moments where it is a thriller, mystery and even yes at times a comedy. However if you're kids want to watch this please take the PG-13 rating very seriously. Sure there is a lot worse content in many R rated films but I feel this is a very hard PG-13 which may have been edited to avoid an R rating. This movie is very violent for a PG-13, and the violence I feel pushes it closer to an R alone. Expect to hear some type of profanity in almost every scene. While there is only one f-word, there are many other uses of other profanities and multiple uses of the Lord's name in vain, so if that bothers you steer clear unless you are watching with some type of filter. There is no actual sex or nudity, however the famous pottery scene does come very close to an actual sexual encounter but it stops before anything too explicit happens. Although the movie is very funny and exciting at times it is also an extremely sad story about death and the afterlife. Do not watch if you have grieved over the loss of a loved one recently. Some of the scenes of ghosts and spirits will also frighten younger children. Additionally the villians are very threatening and may also frighten some sensitive viewers. For 14 and up it makes a great date movie or you can even enjoy it as a family with 14 and up kids, but be advised it is a very violent and sad movie along with a lot of profanity so use discretion. It's still a classic and only a couple small parts make it seem a little dated but aside from those it holds up like a fine wine. Best advice is for kids 14 and up only. Although Patrick Swayze's character is a good role model, Whoopi Goldberg's character really isnt and is portrayed as a charlatan for a majority of the movie, and Demi Moore's character tries to do the right thing for the most part but she is also very vulnerable and manipulated by the villians so she is only somewhat of a good role model. I will say without giving anything away that this movie does have a good message about coping with the loss of a loved one however it still doesnt take away from the sadness of the story and very sensitive viewers will be likely to cry at different times.
