Sephora To Expand Brick & Mortar Footprint With 260+ New Stores In 2021 Across The U.S. Today, Sephora announced its largest store expansion in the retailer's 21-year history in the U.S., including over 60 freestanding customer-centric locations and 200 locations opening inside Kohl's stores later this year.

Kohl's plans to plans to expand its Sephora at Kohl's initiative, which launched in August 2021, to the remainder of Kohl's more than 1,170 stores by 2025.

When Kohl's announced its partnership with Sephora in 2020, the company committed to bringing prestige beauty to neighborhoods across the country, making it accessible to more Americans than ever before while enhancing Kohl's customer experience.

That will bring the total “Sephora at Kohl's” fleet to more than 850, meaning the department store chain and beauty retailer Sephora will reach their goal that was revealed when the store-in-store partnership was first announced in December 2020. The first “Sephora at Kohl's” shop opened in the fall of 2021.

All 1,100 Kohl's stores will have Sephora beauty departments by the end of 2025. While the large Kohl's stores will have 2,500 square foot units, smaller stores will have about 750 square feet devoted to Sephora.

Kohl's Corp. is creating scaled-down Sephora shops to fit into its smaller locations. For fall 2023, the plan is to have 750-square-foot Sephora shops operating at 50 Kohl's locations which are on average 35,000 square feet and would be unable to accommodate the typical 2,500-square-foot Sephora shop-in-shop.

Sephora didn't renew its 15-year contract with JCPenney and moved its in-store shops to Kohl's, which has said it plans to put Sephora in all 1,100 of its stores. About 600 are open now. Target has been adding Ulta Beauty in-store shops to its stores.

Customers will be able to use their Sephora Beauty Insider points to apply discounts to their purchases at Sephora at Kohl's stores and Kohls.com. Kohl's Rewards-issued Kohl's Cash cannot be used on the purchase of Sephora products.

Over 50 percent of the company is owned by investors such as BlackRock Inc., Vanguard Group Inc., Macellum Advisors, and more. About 5.3 percent of Kohl's shares are taken up by hedge funds.

From what I'm seeing as I dig into the background on this story, it looks like the answer to that question is no. The JCPenney and Kohl's brands will remain separate, a source told The Post, with plans to streamline operations, merge IT systems and slash costs.

Kohl's company history timeline

The grocery stores were sold to A&P in 1983, operating under the name Kohl's Food Store, and later Kohl's Food Emporium. A group of investors, led by the senior management, purchased the company in 1986.

As a part of this expansion, Kohl's will open 50 smaller format Sephora shops by the end of 2023, with a plan to roll out to the remainder of the chain by 2025. The Sephora at Kohl's partnership has been proving mutually beneficial to both companies since the start of the venture.
