How To Part Your Hair For Your Face Shape - Blown Lux (2024)

The way you part your hair can completely change the look of your hairstyle and your face shape.

From deep side parts to a bold middle part, a simple update to the way you part your hair can elongate your features, bring out your cheekbones, and soften sharp angles of your face. But with so many different face shapes it can be difficult to determine which part will suit you.

At Blown Lux we’re making things easier with a guide to which parts will suit your face shape so you can look your best.

Round

If you have a round face your cheeks will appear quite prominent and rounded, with your face being equal width and length.

Round face shapes generally suit parts which create length rather than accentuating the roundness. So, visually lengthen your face by drawing more attention to the centre with a middle part or try a deep side part. Both styles will give the illusion of length and create symmetry around your face.

Oval

Oval faces have a forehead slightly wider than the chin, with the length of their face being about one and a half times the width.

If your face is oval-shaped, you lucked out. Oval face shapes tend to suit a wide variety of hair parting and hairstyles in general. This gives you a lot of options when it comes to switching up your hair part and look.

So, if you’re feeling a middle part, go for it, and if you’re looking for a softer side part, you can do that too. There’s no one style which will suit you more than others, so experiment with different hair part positions in the mirror till you find a style which you like.

Heart-Shaped

A heart-shaped face usually has a wider forehead and cheekbones with a narrow jawline and chin.

If you have a heart-shaped face try a deep side part. A deep side part will break up the chin line, which can be pointy if you have a heart-shaped face and will brush softly against your face to give the illusion of softer cheekbones.

A slightly off-centre part would also help create some softness in the hair and give an interesting dimension to the face.

Diamond

Diamond shaped faces have a narrow forehead and jawline with cheekbones at the widest point of the face.

Since those with a diamond face shape have a sharp chin and high cheekbones, the hair part should depend on how much you want to play those features up. A side part will soften your face, while a centre part with highlight those angular features and make them look even more pronounced.

There’s a lot of versatility in a diamond face shape so switch it up every now and again for a dramatic difference.

Square

Those with a square face shape have a prominent jaw and square chin, with forehead and jawline roughly the same width.

An angular shaped face like this tends to suit hairstyles and parts which soften the face and jaw-line.

So, if you have a square face shape try a side part to add a flattering softness to your jaw-line. Make sure it isn’t a deep side part however as it can accentuate the angles of your face and make them appear squarer (unless that’s the look you’re going for of course).

A middle part can also suit a square face but add layers to frame the hair around your face and soften a strong jaw-line.

How do you part your hair for a chubby face? ›

Round face shapes generally suit parts which create length rather than accentuating the roundness. So, visually lengthen your face by drawing more attention to the centre with a middle part or try a deep side part. Both styles will give the illusion of length and create symmetry around your face.

How do I part my hair to make my face look thinner? ›

Parting your hair in the middle allows your hair to frame your face in the same way that long hair does and makes you look slimmer by elongating your face. Add wispy bangs to your do, rather than heavy or blunt bangs. The blunter the bangs the more your face will look rounder.

Who suits a middle parting? ›

If you have an oval, round, diamond, or heart-shaped face, a middle part will help compliment your facial features. “It creates the illusion of length and gives the look of perfect symmetry for the face,” Spellman says.

Should I part my hair left or right? ›

The main factor to consider for this is the direction that your cowlick flows. If it runs clockwise (left to right) then your hair will lay nicer when parted on the left, if it flows counterclockwise (right to left) then it will lay nicer when parted on the right side.

Does your face look fatter with your hair up or down? ›

Like I said, the results are subtle, but pulling your hair up does make your face look instantly thinner and sharper, especially from the profile. Bottom line: If you're not feeling so hot, pull your hair up in a high pony and watch your confidence skyrocket, Ariana Grande-style.

Is the middle part or side part better for chubby face? ›

THE BEST PART FOR ROUND FACE SHAPES

A middle part is the most flattering for those with round faces, as it will complement the symmetry of your face shape while also creating a bit of visual length. As a second option for times when you want to mix things up, a deep side part can have a lengthening effect, too!

Which hairstyle makes face look slim? ›

Start by parting your hair at the centre, loosely tie your hair at the back in a low bun and pull out pieces around the face to soften the look. A voluminous top knot creates a vertical illusion by lengthening your face and giving it a slimming effect.

Do fat faces look better with short or long hair? ›

Stylists recommend medium-length or longer hair for a round face because it elongates your face shape. Keeping your hair below the chin draws attention away from the jaw line.

How do I part my hair to fit my face? ›

A center part will draw attention to the middle of your face and make a pointy chin seem harsher. Bringing your part to the side, on the other hand, can create more balance for your features. “A slightly off-center part would help create some softness in the hair and help break up the face a little more,” says Day.

How to do your hair when you have a fat face? ›

If you have a round and chubby face, a cute bob style will work wonders to hide the extra fat. Just ask your stylist to give you a chin-length bob look. The length will draw attention to your jawline, and highlight your bone structure. The inward flip of the style will accentuate the angles of your face.

What hair length makes you look younger? ›

Shoulder-length hair (or longer) with layers

Forget what you thought about long hair past the age of 40—thick hair actually looks more youthful and polished when it falls shoulder-length or longer. Shorter hair has a tendency to expand at the ends, leaving you with an unflattering triangle effect.

How to tell where to part your hair? ›

To find your natural part, start with towel-dried hair. Working in sections, comb your hair back toward your crown, then pull your head forward and let your hair naturally fall. Notice where it splits—this will be your hair part.

Do I look better with a side part or middle part? ›

“If you want a more angular shape to your face, then a center part is great,” she told me, while those with diamond, heart-shape or square face shapes might consider a side part to show off their bone structure.
