Why does a hard deck exist?
History. The term originated with fighter pilots. “Hard deck” was slang for an altitude (10,000 feet or so) that represented ground level during flight training exercises. If you went below the hard deck, you had hypothetically crashed and were out of the exercise.
Hence, we say that if you go below this altitude, you are considered dead, and we call it the hard deck. There's a soft deck, too, but that one is for limiting certain maneuvers so that you can practice not hitting the hard deck. 'So, flying below the hard deck means you killed yourself.
