There is one country that beats out the U.S. in candy consumption: Sweden. A recent study conducted by Jordbruksverket, the Swedish Board of Agriculture, found that Sweden has the highest candy consumption per capita in the world. Citizens consume on average 35 pounds of it every year.
This made South Koreans the nations with the least avid sweets consumers in the survey. This chart shows the share of respondents from selected countries which said they consumed sweets and chocolate regularly.
In first place as the “world's top sugar consumer” is the United Arab Emirates, who eats 214kg (53,590 teaspoons) per capita, per year. Djibouti: 193kg (48,329 teaspoons) per capita, per year. Belize: 106kg (26,426 teaspoons) per capita, per year. Bahrain: 93kg (23,257 teaspoons) per capita, per year.
The four top chocolate-producing countries are Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Poland. Belgium is one of the largest producers, and much of the chocolate is still made by hand.
