Women over 50 shouldn’t ever wear mini-skirts, says Angie Best (2024)

LAST week Davina McCall made headlines when she said she wouldn't stoped wearing mini dresses even if it "ruined" her career.

But should women stop wearing short skirts and dresses after a certain age?

We asked former WAG and model Angie Best, 70, and Vanessa Feltz, 60, if you really are ever too old to wear a mini.

YES, says former Wag and model Angie Best

I WORK out every day, which means my legs are still in great shape.

But at 70, there’s no way I’d wear a miniskirt.

When I heard Davina McCall’s comments, two things came to mind.

Firstly, the sight of a woman’s legs after the muscles have naturally decreased with age, and secondly, looking at all that wrinkly skin sagging down around their knees.

A miniskirt shows off the thighs, too, so you’ll be seeing big hips and big thighs — and that’s not nice.

I mean, who wants to look at cellulite all over someone’s legs, for God’s sake?

Maybe I’m being old-fashioned, but as women age, I think they should keep a degree of elegance and class about themselves.

It’s about discretion.

What’s more, wearing a short skirt when over the age of 50 simply wouldn’t be fashionable.

And that’s why I don’t own one.

If you’re still lucky enough to have legs like a 20-year-old and they are in shape, nice and smooth and have no wobbly bits, then maybe you could get away with it.

But generally speaking, I believe women shouldn’t wear short skirts once they’re over 50.

It’s all down to common sense — as well as looking in the mirror before you leave the house.

I enjoyed a successful modelling career and when I was younger, I used to love wearing miniskirts.

But that was back in the Sixties and Seventies when minis first came in and everybody was skinny.

If you’re over 50 and are truly desperate to wear a short skirt or dress, then you’ve got to remember that your body is a reflection of what you eat.

You also need to make sure you head to the gym to get your legs in shape, so they are smooth.

And make sure you wear a pair of heels to make your legs look longer, too. You can’t have flats with a mini.

Also, please — make sure you’ve got the right knickers on!

If you bend over, God forbid what could happen if you’re wearing the wrong underwear.

My advice? Save yourself the worry and stick to stylish trousers or long skirts and elegant dresses.

Unless you’re truly desperate to show off your legs, if you’re over 50 leave miniskirts where they belong — in the past.

NO, says Talk TV host Vanessa Feltz

I MAY be 5ft 2in and my legs may not stretch much higher than a footstool, but that doesn’t mean I should be forever prohibited from wearing a miniskirt.

Why should you have to measure up to some kind of imaginary standard, or not be “allowed” to wear something because of your age?

Body fascism — or some bizarre notion of not measuring up to so-called perfection — is far more offensive than wearing a mini ever could be.

Personally, I think you should be able to wear a miniskirt until the moment you pop off.

It might even be perfect for coffin wear, for when you’ve passed away and you’re pushing up daisies.

I love the freedom of a short skirt as it gives you the chance to show off your pins and makes you feel sexy.

Fashion is an expression of your personality, your fantasy, your vision, your creativity.

You should be able to wear a mini whenever you want to, wherever you want to, without anyone having anything to say about it.

Short skirts and dresses are practical, too.

You can wear them with flat boots, high heels, or even Doc Martens.

As for Davina, I can’t imagine wearing a short skirt would ever negatively impact her career.

A great deal of her success is down to the fact that she’s got the most incredible, banging body — and she shows it.

We often see her looking simply magnificent in skin-tight Lycra, workout gear or a bikini.

Besides, wearing a mini doesn’t mean you’re screaming, “Welcome to my crotchless panties!” Y

ou can always wear them with opaque tights and chunky–heeled boots if you don’t want to look like you’re plying your trade on a street corner.

Although, with a miniskirt, if you actually had to turn a trick you’d do a damn good trade. I’m kidding of course.

In the past, I’ve had all sorts of things said about various sartorial choices I’ve made.

And I’ve always felt that it was a very joyless and carping response.

You don’t forfeit the right to wear what you like, or show whichever bits of yourself you feel comfortable showing, as you get older.

Why should you keep your twin peaks under wraps, just in case there might be the odd wrinkle that could offend people?

I’m horrified at the thought of Angie Best NOT wearing a miniskirt.
