How to soak a hoof with white lightning? ›

White Lightning and white vinegar combine to make a solution that "fumes" the hoof in a vapor bag or vapor boot for 30 to 40 minutes. Fuming can be done for shorter periods of time, and the White Lightning people recommend 12 hours or more for severely corroded frogs.

“The best way to deal with white line disease is to trim it out and then treat the surrounding tissue with a chlorine-dioxide foot soak or a topical gel that has chlorine dioxide in it,” says Morrison. “A mild case can also be killed with other products like copper sulfate.

Attempting to moisturize the hoof from external sources such as oils, grease or salves is mostly futile because they wash off too rapidly. The coronary band is the only place where products meant to increase hoof growth should be applied, and even care should be taken here.

Choose vegetable or olive oil for a budget-friendly option.

These oils are great for retaining moisture in the hooves. You can use one or the other, or mix half olive and half vegetable oil. Find olive or vegetable oil in the grocery store.

For Normal Upkeep (for good horse husbandry):

Use every second day after work, this can be adjusted according to the weather and if there is a drought, however under normal circ*mstances for a hoof in good condition 4 applications a week is more than enough even if the horse is being worked and washed daily.

You can use any oil as hoof oil, my farrier suggested putting ordinary veg oil on. If looking for moisture retention put oil on after hosing off legs ( hooves have to be damp not soaking as otherwise oil will just run off of course!).

Iodine (or Bleach-and-Water) Treatment

Treat thrush in horses with a germ-killing product, such as iodine or a bleach-and-water mix, diluted 50-50. The product you use will depend on how much sensitive tissue is exposed.

The normal lower intestinal (colon) lining constantly secretes mucus to protect itself from irritation and to prevent adherence of manure to its surface. When the movement of the intestinal contents slows or stops and mucus production continues, mucus accumulates on the surface of manure.

Instructions for use: Liquid White Lightning® is activated by mixing White Lightning® with equal parts of white vinegar. This step should be performed in paper or plastic cups, but not in metal as White Lightning® is an oxidizer. White Lightning® is aggressive for 8 hours once mixed with vinegar.

Soak the foot.

If cleaning debris out of the foot doesn't improve the horse's lameness, the next step is to soak the hoof. “I like to use warm water, Betadine^® (povidine-iodine) solution, and Epsom salts,” Fallon said. “There are also some commercially available products you can use.”
