There's nothing about HDTV that requires a cable or satellite subscription. In fact, you can watch beautiful, life-like high definition television shows with just a regular set of rabbit ears.
All of the major networks -- ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox -- broadcast their big, prime-time shows in HD and often will also broadcast specials and sporting events in high definition. All you need is an antenna and a tuner to watch those programs. There's no snow, static or ghosting, but if you're in the wrong area, you may not get reception at all.
