TGIF ladies! I get a ton of questions from my readers and subscribers on YouTube about what is age-appropriate to wear and what is not. That is why I’ve dedicated today’s post and video to this exact subject. So, if you wondering what not to wear after 40 and what you should be wearing then keep reading. Also, these style tips apply even if you’re younger so keep reading and watching no matter what your age! I’m not only sharing what NOT TO WEAR but I’m also featuring 6 chic and effortless looks that are both age-appropriate and incredibly chic! STYLE TIP: The most important thing to remember is to wear whatever you feel most confident and most yourself in!
SHOP LOOK 1:
This dress follows rule number 1 because it’s tight but not short! This dress does a really good job of making you look slimmer and taller because of the gathering! I also love how it is cut up in the front to make the legs look elongated. It’s super soft so it feels like I’m wearing my pajamas when I have this on for long amounts of time. This gorgeous dress is travel friendly, too! Pair it with a denim or leather jacket on a chilly night.

WHAT NOT TO WEAR AFTER 40:
#1 SHORT AND TIGHT DRESSES:
It’s definitely appropriate to wear a form-fitting dress, but make sure it isn’t short and tight. My Bailey 44 dress that is featured above is one of my favorite age-appropriate date night dresses. If you’re wanting to wear a dress that’s a bit shorter, I highly recommend that it be looser!

This gorgeous dress follows the rule because it’s short but not too tight, so it’s just perfect for women over the age of 40! It’s flattering and age-appropriate. It’s currently 70% off which is an amazing deal for this impeccable designer dress. I still can’t believe the price! I love the acid wash making this dress super unique and fun. I wear this dress with sneakers during the day and change them out for my favorite white heels at night depending on the occasion. I’m wearing a size 36 in the dress.
SHOP LOOK 3:
This Anine Bing dress follows rule number 1 since the dress is short but not tight! I’ve added a belt that makes it more flattering because I’m accentuating my waistline and cinching up the dress! If I didn’t belt the dress, it comes to my knees and is absolutely huge since I’m only 5’4! If you have any dresses in your closet that are too big, try adding a belt as an accessory! I’m wearing an XXS because the dress does run big.
#2: DON’T WEAR SHORTS THAT ARE TOO TIGHT OR TOO SHORT:
When wearing shorts over 40, make sure the length is age-appropriate! I recommend the shorts being a bit longer and not tight at all.
SHOP LOOK 4 (DRESS IS ON MAJOR SALE):
I love that these shorts are long enough and not tight at all making them the perfect age-appropriate denim shorts! I have been wearing these shorts on repeat this summer – they’re that good! These do run small so make take your regular size and size one up which is what I suggest doing when wearing shorts. I’m wearing a size 25 in the shorts. Also, this beautiful multifunctional dress is almost sold out in this color but is available in olive green and on SALE! I’m wearing an XS.

#3: DON’T WEAR CROP TOPS THAT ARE TOO SHORT:
Would you believe me if I told you…crop tops aren’t only for teens! Crop tops can also be worn by women over 40 if they are worn the correct way. If you want to wear a top that’s shorter like this one, show only a sliver of the skin by pairing with high waisted denim! It’s as simple as that.
SHOP LOOK 5: (TOP IS ON SALE AND CARDIGAN IS UNDER $70):
I think this outfit is so fun for summer because the top is super versatile and chic. As you can see, I’m only showing a tiny bit of skin with these high waisted jeans which are tastefully sexy! I even paired this top with a summer cardigan making it even more age-appropriate. I’m wearing a 25 in these high rise jeans, a size 2 in the top, and an XS in the cardigan.
#4: WHITE JEANS THAT ARE TOO TIGHT OR TOO THIN:
White jeans that are too tight and too thin is one of my biggest fashion pet peeves! If your denim is too thin or too tight, you are able to see all of the stuff that isn’t so pretty. I recommend wearing jeans that are a bit thicker and hide your challenge areas.

These are so comfortable and high waist making them classy and chic. These jeans run big so size down one size, I’m wearing a 24. My olive green linen shirt is on major sale right now! I love wearing button downs and the sleeves rolled up – this is my absolute favorite outfit in the summertime! #5: WORN DOWN HANDBAG OR SHOES:
One thing I truly believe in investing in is shoes and handbags. Why? You will wear these accessories time and time again with your outfits, so you really want to make sure they’re higher quality! They certainly don’t need to be premium designer accessories. I’ve said this before, but Rebecca Minkoff is one of the most affordable handbag designers on the market who I love! My favorite YSL bag is 20% off right now, but if this one is out of your budget, no worries! I found this similar one on Shopbop that is a fraction of the price.
