U.S. Army's Basic Training for Women (2024)

The U.S. Army subjects all new recruits to Basic Combat Training, or BCT, a 10-week course designed to toughen and condition recruits while also educating them about Army philosophy and giving them practical knowledge and experience for their eventual deployments. For women, the BCT experience is almost identical to that of men, with only a few differences. For the most part, BCT for women is not about having a different, gender-specific experience so much as sharing the human experience of being torn down and built back up into a soldier.

Basic Combat Training Overview

Basic Combat Training lasts ten weeks. Recruits arrive at a reception center where they undergo administrative processing and have the opportunity to become acquainted with one another in an event called Reception Week. The remainder of BCT consists of three phases, which the Army describes on its BCT website. During training women live together in their own barracks, but attend class and carry out training exercises alongside men.

For Red Phase, recruits get haircuts and uniforms, learn about Army history and the Seven Army Core Values, undergo training in defense against nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, learn rappelling and landmine defense and take the Army Physical Fitness Test. In White Phase, recruits go on tactical marches, learn engagement skills and marksmanship, conduct situational training and complete the Confidence Obstacle Course. During Blue Phase, recruits received advanced weapons training, conduct field training exercises and go on more tactical marches. BCT ends with a graduation ceremony for those who make the cut.

Fitness Standards

Basic Combat Training fitness tests have lower minimum performance requirements for female recruits. Women up to age 21 must complete a minimum of 13 push-ups, 47 sit-ups, and run two miles in 19 minutes and 42 seconds or less. Older women have slightly lower minimum requirements. The sit-up and running requirements are similar to those for men, but the push-up requirements are less than half what a male soldier would be expected to do. However, these are only minimum requirements and drill sergeants encourage their recruits to exceed these minimums significantly. Those who only squeak by may even find that it reflects poorly on their record and career advancement prospects. Additionally, while the physical fitness requirements for women are lower, the training course itself is designed for males. Since both sexes carry out their training exercises together, there is a lot of pressure on women to perform to the male standards.

Preponderance of Men

The biggest difference facing women in Basic Combat Training is that they will always have a co-ed training experience. Due to the higher number of men entering the military, most BCT centers are often only for men, who have no female recruits to train alongside. However, there are no female-only centers. All women train at co-ed facilities and must get accustomed to the preponderance of men from the beginning. Drill sergeants, platoon guides, and other staff will be mostly male. A preponderance of men in a physically aggressive environment increases the risk of sexual assault, which is a risk that remains with women throughout their military service.

Personal Appearance Standards

Army regulations provide that women with hair below shoulder length must wear it in an approved bun. Those with shorter hair can wear it loose so long as they keep it neat and clean. Women can also wear nylons or pantyhose, small earrings, and up to one ring on each hand, with wedding ring sets counting as a single ring. All of these allowances come with specific restrictions, however, to which female recruits must conform.
