How do you reset the ribbon on a typewriter? ›

Turn the spool in your hand, apply one drop of ink to another dry section of the ribbon, and coat the width of the ribbon with the tip of the bottle. Continue turning the spool and applying the ink until the full ribbon has been completely, evenly inked. Rethread the ribbon into the typewriter.

Manual typewriters perform best with a specific grade of ribbon material while their electric counterparts perform better with another. Widths vary and some typewriters rely on a small eyelet inserted into the ribbon in order to actuate a ribbon reverse mechanism when the ribbon reaches its end.

Almost all manual typewriters use half-inch-wide ribbons, and most typewriters can use dual-color ribbons (such as red and black), so look for one of those -- they look nice and can be useful.

Insert the new ribbon spools, and make sure the black ink is above the red ink and that the ribbon is coming around the spools. Be sure to feed it into the appropriate slots. Feed the ribbon through the small guides that are on the sides of the spools and through the ribbon carrier.

Reset your ribbon back to the default settings

When you reset all tabs on the ribbon, you also reset the Quick Access Toolbar to show only the default commands. Follow these steps to reset the ribbon: In the Customize the Ribbon window, click Reset. Click Reset all customizations.

Cotton Ribbon yields a thicker, bolder, and darker text. Nylon prints crisp and clean, very similar in nature to silk. Cotton ribbons will actually degrade overtime and clog your type slugs, so be sure to clean them monthly while using cotton ribbons.
