TUPPERWARE WILL CHANGE ITS DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM (2024)

A Tupperware division will close an Idaho plant but expand two others in a $60 million consolidation that should increase control over inventory, a company official said Monday.

Tupperware Home Parties-North America, based in Kissimmee, will close its Jerome, Idaho, plant by year’s end, idling 800 full-time and part-time workers.

“The Idaho plant is located the farthest from key transportation hubs,” said K. Douglas Martin, president of Tupperware Home Parties-North America.

The plant’s production will be shifted to Tupperware’s plants in Hemingway, S.C., and Halls, Tenn. Those plants will increase capacity and take on warehousing and distribution functions. The plants, which together employ 1,300, have access to interstate highways and rail lines.

Tupperware officials told the 535 full-time and 265 part-time workers at the Idaho plant Monday morning that they would be laid off by year’s end. The 15-year-old plant, which employs 12 percent of the population of the farming community in southern Idaho, will begin phasing out production in August.

“It’s pretty much of a shock,” said Jerome Mayor Ralph Peters. “It looks a little bleak.”

Don Hofmann, Tupperware’s vice president of marketing, said he does not know how many jobs will be added at the South Carolina and Tennessee plants or how many people will be transferred from the Jerome plant.

The three plants are the only U.S. operations that make Tupperware’s 200 food-storage, cookware and toy lines. Tupperware also operates a plastics plant in Augusta, Ga., where it makes materials for its Ultra 21 line of microwave cookware; and 15 foreign manufacturing plants.

By consolidating, Tupperware plans to take on the warehousing, packaging and shipping that its distributors do, Hofmann said.

Under its current distribution system, Tupperware relies upon its 370 U.S. distributors, who are independent contractors, to buy their products on speculation and store them in warehouses. The distributors sell the products to Tupperware’s 80,000 U.S. dealers, who in turn sell the products at home parties and other events.
