Victoria’s Secret was established in 1977 when American businessman Roy Raymond start his own women’s lingerie business. The store grew rapidly and has become one of the largest and most valuable apparel brands in the world. The global women's night and underwear market was valued at about 74.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. Victoria’s Secret was previously part of Limited Brands but, in 2021, Limited Brands separated. Victoria's Secret & Co, made up of all the Victoria's Secret brands, became an independent, public company. L Brands became Bath & Body Works, Inc.

Victoria’s Secret financials

The company generated revenues of 6.8 billion dollars in its 2021 financial year. This represented an increase of more than 1.3 billion U.S. dollars from the previous year, when sales fell due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This also led to the closures of more than 200 Victoria's Secret stores in North America in the same year. Store numbers continued to fall in 2021, although average sales per store rose, even exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

Competitors

Whilst Victoria’s Secret is one of the biggest names in apparel and underwear, there are other companies vying to grab the top spot. One of Victoria’s Secret’s biggest competitors is Calvin Klein, owned by PVH Corporation. Calvin Klein has a range of products, but the brand is particularly well-known for its line of underwear. Calvin Klein generated 3.66 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2021. With the exception of 2020, revenue has remained relatively stable since 2017.
