The Oversized Cardigan: How to Style so You Don’t Look Frumpy

Cardigans are very on-trend right now, and it makes sense. They work for most seasons, they’re soft and comfy, and with the right layers, they’re easy to style.

I talk to many women who have a favorite cardigan they love to feel cozy in around the house, but they’re scared to wear it in public because they think they’ll look frumpy. With the right fit, the right length, and the right type of layers underneath, you can comfortably and stylishly wear your cardigan out and about, too.

The Right Fit

When you’re buying an oversized cardigan, you are generally still going to buy your usual size. You don’t need to size up to get that oversized look. Make sure the shape isn’t one that’s going to completely swallow you. If it’s a batwing or cocoon style cardigan, plan to wear form-fitting layers underneath, since they add volume to your middle. Skinny jeans, a tapered waist, and a belt will provide definition under your cardigan and keep you from looking frumpy.

The Right Length

Choosing the right length cardigan for your body type is key. If you’re tall, you can safely wear a long cardigan that hits anywhere from your hip to your calf. If you’re short, your cardigan should hit somewhere above your knee to your hip.

What you’re planning to wear with your cardigan can change the ideal length as well. With pants, you can pull off any length, but with a skirt, your cardigan needs to hit slightly above or slightly below the hem of your skirt.

The Right Layers

Most cardigans are coming in solid colors these days, but you’ll still find some patterns like stripes, argyle, camo, and animal prints. Style a patterned cardigan best with a solid color underneath. Pull this look together with knee-high boots or booties and a v-neck boyfriend tee.

Spice up your solid cardigan with a pattern under them (hint: classic stripes). If you keep your top and cardigan low key, wear animal print flats, statement earrings, and denim jeans for a casual, put-together look. Camis with a lovely, detailed neckline can immediately take a casual cardigan from blah to wow! Adding in little pops and details like that will elevate your look and make your cardigan more versatile, even for date nights and more chic events.
