The Hills was one of the most popular reality TV shows of all time that aired from 2006 to 2010 before being revived as The Hills: New Beginnings, although it undeniably had many fake moments. While The Hills is iconic in reality TV, its ending revealed just how contrived the genre can be. This has led to many plot lines being exposed for being fake over the years.
Although The Hills was always presented as a reality series, many viewers and publications pointed out instances of scripted scenes and manufactured drama that aired over the years. In some cases, cast members admitted to filming scenes days after they occurred in reenactments. However, in other cases, cast members appeared to flat-out fake romances and stage scenes altogether. This led to many fake moments in the original run of The Hills.
10 Lauren's Job at Teen Vogue
When it comes to fake storylines on The Hills, one of the most manufactured aspects of the show appear to be the jobs that cast members claimed to have. Lauren Conrad's internship and subsequent job at Teen Vogue appeared heavily scripted to viewers. Unrealistic situations and conflicts arose constantly for the sake of the show, as too many issues that occurred seemed to be inauthentic.
9 Stephanie's Job With Kelly Cutrone
Spencer Pratt's sister Stephanie Pratt is another cast member on The Hills who appeared to have a manufactured career, though her work with Kelly Cutrone appeared even more fake than Lauren's time at Teen Vogue. It turns out that Stephanie wasn't actually hired to work for Kelly, though she had an internship with her on The Hills. Kelly revealed during a podcast reposted by mtvthehillsnewbeginnings on Instagram that she only brought Stephanie onboard to give Lauren experience with firing someone.
8 Heidi's Job At Bolthouse Productions
A third job that appeared fake on The Hills is Heidi Montag working at Bolthouse Productions. Heidi later confirmed that she had, in fact, never worked in PR for Bolthouse, as was presented on the show. Heidi opened up to Buzzfeed after The Hills about her entire plot line being manufactured, including a dramatic plot about her stealing a promotion from her coworker Elodie. That also means that Heidi being fired from Bolthouse was a scripted plot line.
7 Audrina And Justin Bobby's Relationship
While jobs seemed exaggerated and sometimes entirely staged for drama, so were relationships of both romantic and platonic nature. One of the fakest romances on The Hills was Audrina Patridge's on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bobby. This showmance constantly came across as being staged for the cameras, as viewers heavily speculated that Audrina and Justin Bobby's long-suffering romance was played up for the show.
6 Audrina's Female Friendships
While Audrina's romance with Justin Bobby was suspicious at best, her friendships with fellow cast members were also called into question, especially her friendships with Lauren and her close friend Lo Bosworth. While Lauren and Lo were genuine best friends, Audrina's inclusion into their friend group appeared to be much more staged. Lo even told US Weekly that she and Lauren were only friends with Audrina for the show and not in real life.
5 Audrina Joining The Show
Ultimately, Audrina even appearing on The Hills was suspicious and seemingly scripted, as she wasn't an authentic part of the friend group that had first emerged on Laguna Beach. Audrina wasn't one of Lauren's original friends or enemies, as she was actually scouted for the show. The fact that producers brought Audrina onboard makes her inclusion in the show feel entirely scripted, as she was likely only acting during all of her romances and friendships.
4 Heidi Crashing Teen Vogue's Party
Many of the most iconic moments on The Hills now appear to have been staged, including an infamous scene where Heidi crashed the Teen Vogue party at her former best-friend-turned-enemy Lauren's job. Heidi, who has been keen on revealing which scenes were fake, opened up to US Weekly about the infamous scene being scripted. She said that producers set up the scene, and she wasn't aware that she was crashing a work event for Lauren. This was one of the many moments of the show that were referred to as cast members offering genuine reactions during staged scenes.
3 Lauren and Heidi's Falling Out
Furthermore, the feud between best friends Lauren and Heidi was a central storyline throughout The Hills. However, it was rumored that their falling out was exaggerated for the sake of drama, as many viewers were hooked on their dramatic feud. As fans of the show know, Lauren had a falling out with her best friend Heidi after Heidi and Spencer allegedly spread rumors about Lauren having a sex tape with her ex-boyfriend, Jason Wahler. While Lauren and Heidi never became friends again, it's unclear how much of their feud was played up for ratings.
2 Spencer and Heidi's Relationship Drama
Spencer and Heidi's turbulent relationship was a major focus of The Hills. Many viewers believed that their arguments and conflicts were exaggerated or scripted for entertainment purposes. While the couple had a lot of issues on The Hills, they are still happily married in real life. It's now heavily believed that Heidi and Spencer staged their problems for ratings, as playing the villains earned them infamy and fame. Heidi and Spencer appeared to enjoy their negative spotlight, as it made them reality TV stars.
1 Brody & Lauren's Relationship
A final major plot point on The Hills that appears to be scripted is the relationship between Lauren and Brody Jenner. Lauren and Brody's relationship was a big part of The Hills, as Brody also had a romance with her Laguna Beach rival Kristin Cavallari. This ended up being the second love triangle between the women, who infamously fought over Stephen Colletti. However, it was later revealed that Lauren and Brody were close friends who staged a romance for ratings. The fake relationship between Lauren and Brody is perhaps one of the most shockingly scripted aspects of The Hills.
