So you've decided that you want to go with a tie for your wedding day, but now comes another decision! Do you go for a regular width tie or a skinny width?

Often when you think of these different widths some extremes come to mind, you picture the super wide ties of the 1920's or the super skinny ties worn by the likes of the Beatles in the late 1950's. Whilst these ties have their place in fashion most of you prefer something in between on your wedding day and that's where we come in!

We go for a subtle difference between our ties, the regular width measuring 7.5cm and the skinny measuring 6cm at the widest point.

Choosing which of these is going to work best for you is ultimatelyyour personal preference, however there are some factors you can consider in the decision making:

Your body type

Slim/Smaller Build

If you have slender shoulders, chest or torso a skinny tie is going to work well for you, the narrower tie will balance well with your body and look wider on you than it will on a larger person.

Average/Athletic Build

Generally either style will work well for you, pay closer attention to the other notes below though as there are still important factors to consider!

Broad/Large Build

If you have a wider torso naturally or have spent endless hours working on building up those upper body muscles you might find that a skinny tie can look a bit too skinny on you. Generally with our ties you will probably still be okay with a skinny tie but if you're in doubt then our regular tie is your friend.

Lapel Width

This is an often missed important point to consider when choosing your ties, have a look at the suit you have chosen and try to match your tie width to your lapel size as closely as possible.

If you choose a wider tie with a narrow lapel or vice versa you could affect the way the cut of your suit looks on your body and change the proportions.

This doesn't mean to say you have to follow this rule to the letter but definitely consider it if your lapels are particularly skinny (slim ties are best!) or if your suit is double breasted (definitely opt for a wider tie).

Your theme or styling

If you are going for a certain look for your wedding you can really help it along with the right tie. If for example you've chosen to run with a 1920's theme you'll definitely want to stick to the regular width options, if your aim is more mods and rockers you should definitely opt for a skinny tie.

Age and preference

Whilst there is absolutely no requirement for certain ages to wear certain ties you may want to discuss with different members of your wedding party what they would like and make sure they are comfortable. If you have a teenager as one of your groomsmen for instance you will generally find they would prefer a skinny tie (definitely worth considering if you think it will be difficult getting them to wear a tie at all). In a similar way you may have more traditional members of the older generations who would prefer to stick with a more classic regular width (this is really not a hard and fast rule though so make sure you talk to them!).

Hopefully this helps you with your decision, at the end of the day it is your big day so make sure you're comfortable with what you're wearing! Have a look at the video below to get a good idea of the size difference.
