Textile Facemasks and Gowns

RNs are not required for textile facemasks and gowns intended for a medical purpose. The Textile Fiber Products Identification Act does not apply to textile fiber products that are subject to the requirements of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. This includes facemasks and gowns intended for a medical purpose (i.e., the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease).

Businesses can use a registered identification number (RN) in place of a company name on the required label. Businesses can apply to the FTC for an RN or to update an existing RN, free of charge. An RN is not required.
