Salt: Cover the hide with non-iodized salt to draw out moisture. Inhibits bacteria growth; some sources claim salt damages the hide (in the minority); others claim it's mandatory to set hair; once salted, hides can be stored for months, maybe years; a hide can also be frozen for some time before salting.

Get a pickle jar and some denatured alcohol. The alcohol preserves the skin and locks in the fur. Mix it 50/50 with water and soak the pelt in it for a day.

Indians of the southeast, northeast and the southern plains soaked their hides in corn water. Either using mashed sweet corn alone, or ground flint corn and brains to tan their hides.

You may also wipe smoothly in the direction of the hair with a damp (not wet) cloth using mild soap and water. Do not soak the hide or get it wet, and do not wash in a washing machine or dry clean. Brushing the cowhide with a hard plastic brush will help to keep the hair soft and fluffy and helps to remove dirt.

If you must store pelts for long periods they should be placed in a freezer. For short periods of storage, keep in a dark, cool dry room. Pelts may be wrapped lightly in newsprint, stored in burlap or nylon bags or hung from hooks or rafters. Ship to market in clean bags or cardboard boxes, never in plastic bags.

For hydrating your fur coat, you would need a hair conditioner or fabric softener mixed with two cups of warm water. Combine both in a spray bottle and spray it on the area that needs care. Immerse the skin in the tanning solution for 2 to 5 days, depending upon its thickness. Two days should be sufficient for a rabbit skin, while a deer hide may require up to 5 days.

After salting, roll the hide up and place on an incline to allow fluids to drain away from the hide. Wait approximately 12 hours. Unroll the hide and shake all of the wet salt off. Apply a new layer of fresh salt to the skin as explained above.
