Overwatch 2 Genji Hero Guide » Changes, Abilities, How to Play (2024)

Overwatch 2’s Genji is a highly mobile and skill-expressive damage character. He is one of the most popular damage characters because of his versatility and play-making potential. Genji has a dash that resets on kills, wall climbing, and the ability to deflect nearly all incoming damage.

Genji is best utilized when joined with other highly versatile picks like Winston and Tracer. In this article, we’ll look at Genji’s weapons, abilities, ultimate ability and backstory. We’ll start by looking at the changes Genji underwent from Overwatch to Overwatch 2.

Genji Overwatch 2 Changes

The only change made directly to Genji in Overwatch 2 was the new DPS role passive, making him move and reload faster when he scores an elimination. The real differences in Overwatch 2 for Genji are the new solo tank format in 5v5 and the removal of many CC abilities, like Brigittes shield bash stun. With most of Genji’s hardest counters being removed, it is much easier for him to take control of the game.

Genji’s Weapons And Abilities: How To Play Genji

Genji is not one of the new heroes in Overwatch 2. Genji is a skilled cybernetic ninja who can dish out large amounts of damage quickly. He is equipped with a sword that can slice through enemies with ease, and his shurikens can deal high amounts of damage from a distance.

  • Genji’s primary fire sends three shurikens in a linear path. You can use your primary fire to poke enemy Overwatch 2 supports and damage to set up an easier kill, or go for easier shots on Overwatch 2 tanks to build up your devastating ultimate.
  • His secondary fire also sends three shurikens, but all at once, in a fan pattern. Use this only when up close to secure kills, and try to weave in melee attacks when they are low health.
  • Cyber Agility allows Genji to double jump and wall climb. Use these two in conjunction to reach high points to allow for easier poke with your primary, or flanking opportunities on the enemy backline in the Overwatch 2 map.
  • Genji’s Swift Strike makes him dash forwards, dealing 50 damage to all enemies in his path; getting an elimination resets the cooldown of this ability.

Genji should look to use his dash to secure kills and use the reset to dash again out to safety. Swift Strike also provides tons of multi kill potential when the resets are used offensively, just be careful not to dash into an unwinnable fight. To help with these multi-kills, try engaging with an Overwatch 2 tank like Winston or Wrecking Ball, as their Area of Effect damage can place multiple enemies within your lethal range.

Using Genji’s Deflect ability sends all incoming projectiles back at the enemy, including certain ultimates. This ability takes timing, and surprise, and aim to achieve maximum value. You can always use it to save yourself. Just keep in mind that beam weapons like Winston and Zarya go through deflect.

What is Genji’s ult ability, and how to use it

With his ultimate ability, Dragonblade, Genji brings out the sword on his back for six seconds, swinging it once per second, dealing 120 damage. Use your Swift Strike and its resets to close the gap on targets, or weave the Strike in between swings.

Be incredibly careful when using Blade, as the entire enemy team will certainly look to shut you down. You should try to save deflect for when you blade, to block the initial wave of panic abilities the enemy will throw at you.

Your most valuable support for Dragonblade is bonus health or damage resistance for survivability and a damage boost to allow you to instakill enemies with a single swing and swift strike. Ana is the best supporting pick for Genji, as her Nano boost with a blade, dubbed the “Nanoblade” is nearly unstoppable.

What Is Genji’s Backstory?

Genji was born in Japan, and as the second-born son in the criminal Shimada Clan, he was mostly left to his own devices. Genji was trained to fight but preferred to spend his time on the streets and arcades of Hanamura. After the death of their father, older brother Hanzo wanted Genji to take a more active role within the clan and attempted to murder him after he refused. Genji was rescued by Angela Ziegler (Mercy), who rebuilt his body with cybernetics.

After many years with Overwatch and after taking down the family business, all Genji was left with was a cybernetic body that he resented. He left Overwatch and eventually found himself in the company of Shambali monk Zenyatta, who taught Genji to accept himself and his body. After one final confrontation with his brother, Genji was last seen fighting a giant Null Sector robot with the rest of the Overwatch heroes who accepted Winston’s call.
