Molly-Mae Hague shares unseen photo from her endometriosis surgery (2024)

Molly-Mae Hague has shared a never seen before photo taken shortly after undergoing endometriosis surgery last year.

The black and white snap, taken in hospital, shows two painful looking surgical wounds on her stomach and a cannula in the back of her hand.

The 22-year-old used the image to invite her 6.2m followers to ask questions about her experience with the condition. She will be using their responses as the basis for a new YouTube video documenting her 'journey' with endometriosis.

She wrote: "Filming my Endo video today... please ask any questions about my journey and I will do my best to share what I can."

The Love Island star has openly shared her struggles with endometriosis and uses social media to speak candidly about her path to diagnosis and treatment - neither of which has been easy.

In June 2021, Molly-Mae revealed that she 'suffers with excruciating periods' and after an outpouring of concern from her 6.2m followers urging her to check for endometriosis, she discovered that did have the condition.

Her 'excruciating periods' were cause for concern

However, Molly-Mae claimed that her symptoms were previously ignored or dismissed by doctors, but a team of private specialists told her, 'you absolutely do have endometriosis, it's clear as day.'

In September she underwent surgery, explaining shortly afterwards that it had been harder than she anticipated - as was the recovery.

She said: 'I've definitely been all over the place these last couple of weeks. I didn't tell anybody, but I had my endometriosis surgery.

'The operation was way way harder to go through than I thought and my recovery time was quite a bit longer than I had planned and I was just a bit of a mess.'

As well as showing off two scars, the Pretty Little Thing creative director also told her followers that surgeons had made other incisions.

Molly-Mae explained: 'They obviously went in in my belly button as well and lower down.'

The surgery has left scarring, but Molly-Mae says that it has also changed her figure.

She said: 'I'm very self-critical. I think us girls have a tendency to be very self-critical. I know I am, especially since my endometriosis operation. My stomach still hasn't returned back to normal and it's something I've struggled quite a bit with.'

Average waiting time for an endo diagnosis is 8 years

Unfortunately, Hague's experience of being ignored by doctors is extremely common as symptoms are brushed off as period pains. On average, women wait eight years get a diagnosis.

While expressing her relief at finally knowing the cause of her debilitating pain she explained that 'it's not a good thing that I have endometriosis, because obviously it can affect fertility and other things, and you can never really cure it.'

This isn't the first time Molly-Mae has shown her endometriosis scars, though. She pointed out the marks whilst modelling workout clothes in a vlog and told viewers how she has struggled with her body image following the operation. She added: 'Not that I have to justify why my stomach isn't extra toned today but yes, that is why.'

In a recent vid titled 'SPEND MY PERIOD WEEK WITH ME', the influencer reveals that she 'just knows that [her] operation hasn't worked' and that 'the pain is unbearable.' She explained that 'it's another one of those days where I have to somehow make it through the day whilst being in so much pain. I am literally in pain to the point that I just want to curl up in a ball and cry.'

Molly-Mae hasn't shied away from raising awareness about other health issues, either. Following the discovery and removal of a 'huge' lump in her breast that 'felt like a literal golf ball', she used her platform to issue a reminder to 'check your bodies.' And, in November 2020, she told fans of her cancer scare after finding an abnormal mole on her calf.

What is endometriosis?

'Endometriosis is a condition where cells, like the ones in the lining of the womb, are found elsewhere in the body,' says Endometriosis UK CEO Emma Cox. 'Each month, like the cells in your womb, these endometriosis cells build up, then break down and bleed. But, unlike the cells in the womb that leave the body as a period, this blood has no way of escaping.' The result of this amounts to excess scar tissue and inflammation that causes debilitating pain.

What are the symptoms?

Endometriosis can be a hard one to spot since a lot of the symptoms overlap with other conditions and are often brushed off as period pains.

The most common symptoms to look out for include:

  • Pelvic and lower back pain
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhoea
  • Painful bowl movements
  • Urinary urgency issues
  • Fatigue
  • Painful sex
