It was a proud moment for India when Vaishali Shadangule, founder of eponymous label Vaishali S, became the first Indian woman designer to showcase her collection at the coveted Paris Haute Couture Week last year. With her impeccable achievement, she put Indian textiles on the global map.
On Monday, Union Textile Minister Piyush Goyal took to Twitter to laud the designer and shared her inspiring journey.

Hailing from the city Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, Vaishali’s story of being broke at the age of 17 to becoming the first Indian female designer to partake in the Paris Haute Couture Week is truly inspiring.
She left her house at the age of 17, stayed in a hostel and did several jobs to make ends meet. Fashion was nowhere in the scene. She, however, often suggested people on how to dress up and shared styling tips. That’s when someone suggested her to try fashion designing - a term that was new for her. With the help of a friend, she visited a fashion institute and got introduced to the world of fashion.
In 2001, she founded her eponymous label and opened her first small boutique in Malad.
Her vision has always been to use Indian textiles to create modern things. With her strong will to make “different things”, she managed to open two more stores and then took her label ahead by showcasing collections at various fashion weeks.
In July 2021, she debuted at the Paris Haute Couture Week and put Indian textiles on the global map.
“This was my dream to take Indian textiles and craft to an international level. Because we always see a lot of international designers, they use our skill and craft and we’re always made in India. That thought was always there that we have so much in our country, why can’t we do it,” she told TN Plus.
Several Bollywood celebrities such as Sonam Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin have embraced her creations.
