Mars has shrunk the size of its Maltesers sharing bags in a bid to mitigate rising costs. Its 189g Maltesers packs have been swapped for 175g packs - but prices have remained the same.

Maltesers are a British confectionery product manufactured by Mars, Incorporated. First sold in the UK in 1937, they were originally aimed at women. They have since been sold in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States and Middle East.

A spokesman for its owner Mondelez said: 'Our products are much more expensive to make. ' He added: 'We're facing the same challenges that so many other food companies have already reported when it comes to significantly increased production costs – whether it's ingredients, energy or packaging – and rising inflation.

A Mars spokesperson told Mirror Online: "We are not planning to change the shape of the much-loved original Maltesers, however we are continually looking at ways to extend the brand, creating new ways for our customers to enjoy Maltesers." As you'll notice, this is an odd statement.

Both the British Maltesers and the American Whoppers are chocolate covered malted milk balls. Both snacks were initially released in the late 1930s.

Unfortunately, malted milk balls covered in chocolate are not available in the United States. Mars reportedly tried to market its products under the Malteser name, but the company that owns the Malteser name objected.
