'Making the Cut' Stars Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn Get Real About Leaving 'Project Runway' (2024)

  • Making the Cut starring Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn comes to Amazon Prime Video on Friday, March 27.
  • Heidi and Tim rejoin forces to co-host and produce the new fashion series after leaving Project Runway in 2018.
  • Speaking to Good Housekeeping, the pair discusses walking away from Project Runway, their fun behind-the-scenes antics while making the new series, getting attached to designers, and more.

Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn are the iconic duo that the fashion world will always need. So when the news broke that the two were reuniting for a new Amazon Prime fashion series called Making the Cut after calling it quits on Project Runway in September 2018, fans of the pair were, of course, beyond delighted.

While talking to Heidi and Tim about their move to the streaming service, both seemed very happy with their decision.

"It was like we never left," Heidi tells Good Housekeeping in a joint interview with Tim. "You know, I always say that Tim and I, you know, this is the longest marriage I've ever been in, and I'm still happy. So we were just kind of on a little break."

For Heidi, taking on a new project after working on Project Runway with Tim for 16 seasons was a much-needed breath of fresh air: "You know how a marriage can kind of get maybe a little stale after 17 years, we got injected with a lot more energy again."

Tim feels the same way, adding that he knew after parting ways with Project Runway that he'd eventually collaborate with Heidi again.

"It's just been a joy and I have to say, the frustrations that I felt with Project Runway had everything to do with Heidi, because she and I barely interacted on Runway," Tim tells us. "In Making The Cut, we're together all the time, and it's thrilling and fun."

The way Heidi and Tim see it, Making the Cut takes things one step further than Runway. While it follows a similar competition show structure, in that a set group of designers are competing in challenges and only one can win, in Making the Cut, viewers can buy the winning looks on Amazon for under $100. It's a win-win, they say — the designers get to drastically expand their brands, and consumers get better access to the pieces.

Apart from loving the purchase component of the new show, both Heidi and Tim emphasized how much fun they had filming the new series in Paris, Tokyo, and New York back in 2019 alongside fellow judges Naomi Campbell, Nicole Richie, Carine Roitfeld, Joseph Altuzarra, and Chiara Ferragni.

"I've known Naomi for a very long time, so we went to dinner sometimes in Tokyo. You know, we just, it's a fun job to have. It's not like, 'Ugh, I have to go to work tomorrow.' We love what we do, and we love fashion, that's why we're in it," Heidi explains.

The only downside? Having to say "auf Wiedersehen" to so many talented designers over the weeks of competition.

"I have to look in someone's eye and I have to tell them, 'I'm sorry, but you're not making the cut,' you know, it's not a nice feeling," Heidi reveals. "I try to not get too close to them."

Tim, by contrast, does get pretty close to the designers: "I always would look over to you, and I'm like, 'Are you crying, Tim?' and he's bawling, because, you know, you get more emotional," Heidi adds.

For Tim, it's really the judges' Q&As with the designers that get him choked up. "The designers would reveal things that I just found very touching and very moving. They are people who have spirits and feelings, and ... they're also extremely talented, and you just feel for them. And it's very hard to let anyone go."

But eliminating designers is the name of the game, and, ultimately, allows the very top contestants to shine in the finale showdown in New York — an episode Tim and Heidi agree is a must-watch event.

"It's always a great surprise when they put a whole collection together," Heidi concludes. "I'm always mind blown what they can do."

Cait wait to see how the designers "make it work!"
