"It was like we never left," Heidi tells Good Housekeeping in a joint interview with Tim. "You know, I always say that Tim and I, you know, this is the longest marriage I've ever been in, and I'm still happy. So we were just kind of on a little break."
For Heidi, taking on a new project after working on Project Runway with Tim for 16 seasons was a much-needed breath of fresh air: "You know how a marriage can kind of get maybe a little stale after 17 years, we got injected with a lot more energy again."
Tim feels the same way, adding that he knew after parting ways with Project Runway that he'd eventually collaborate with Heidi again.
"It's just been a joy and I have to say, the frustrations that I felt with Project Runway had everything to do with Heidi, because she and I barely interacted on Runway," Tim tells us. "In Making The Cut, we're together all the time, and it's thrilling and fun."

The only downside? Having to say "auf Wiedersehen" to so many talented designers over the weeks of competition.
"I have to look in someone's eye and I have to tell them, 'I'm sorry, but you're not making the cut,' you know, it's not a nice feeling," Heidi reveals. "I try to not get too close to them."
Tim, by contrast, does get pretty close to the designers: "I always would look over to you, and I'm like, 'Are you crying, Tim?' and he's bawling, because, you know, you get more emotional," Heidi adds.
For Tim, it's really the judges' Q&As with the designers that get him choked up. "The designers would reveal things that I just found very touching and very moving. They are people who have spirits and feelings, and ... they're also extremely talented, and you just feel for them. And it's very hard to let anyone go."
But eliminating designers is the name of the game, and, ultimately, allows the very top contestants to shine in the finale showdown in New York — an episode Tim and Heidi agree is a must-watch event.
"It's always a great surprise when they put a whole collection together," Heidi concludes. "I'm always mind blown what they can do."
