Do laundry sanitizers really work? ›

Regular washing with laundry detergent will remove some germs and bacteria, but to "sanitize" laundry means to use high temperatures or chemicals to kill 99.9 percent of germs, like OxiClean Laundry and Home Sanitizer, which also works as a great mold remover.

A disinfectant, such as chlorine bleach, added to your load does a much better job getting rid of pathogens. Still, hot water can't hurt. Use the warmest water setting the items can take, and wash them according to the maker's instructions.

You cannot mix this with soap. This disinfectant is a "quat", short for dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. Most detergents contain ANIONIC sufactants which neutralize quats.

To use vinegar to disinfect your laundry, try adding 1 cup to the rinse cycle. Not only can it kill germs and bacteria, but it's also a great natural deodorizer. White vinegar can be used on colors and whites, keeping clothes bright, and works as an effective fabric softener, too.

To kill bacteria, use Lysol Laundry Sanitizer in the fabric softener compartment or pour directly into the rinse cycle. Use two caps filled to the correct line for your machine. To disinfect, pre-soak with laundry sanitizer. Use 2 capfuls in 1 gallon of cold water.

Hotel Laundry Uses Hot Water at 160°F

It is washed at 160°F. When you wash your sheets and towels at home, take a page out of the hotel laundry playbook and use hot water. ‍For true sanitization and aggressive stain removal, hot water is the only way to go.

Hot water washing at a temperature of at least 160°F is advisable. You can use a steam jet during this process. The laundry should be dried and pressed before being transported back to the facility. Be sure the items are well packaged before transportation to prevent contamination from dust and dirt.

Is laundry sanitizer better than bleach? ›

There is less bacteria in the laundry after washing with the Lysol Laundry Sanitizer. It seems that the Lysol Laundry Sanitizer works better when it has more TIME with the laundry and possibly in the warmer water (since rinse cycles are usually cold). It still doesn't compare to chlorine bleach.

Our laundry sanitizer can be used on standard and HE machines; it works well even in cold water, and is gentle on fabrics including whites, darks and colors. Add 2 capfuls, each filled to line 1 of the dosing cup, to the fabric softener compartment or directly to your rinse cycle wash.

Hot water washing at temperatures greater than 160 degrees F for 25 minutes and low temperature washing at 71 to 77 degrees F (22-25 degrees C) with a 125-part-per-million (ppm) chlorine bleach rinse remain effective ways to process laundry.

White vinegar has an ingredient known as acetic acid, which can kill viruses and bacteria so they can be easily washed away during the cleaning cycle. A half cup of white vinegar can act as a disinfectant and a deodorizer—removing those pesky germs and working to soften your fabrics.
