Why did King Charles wear a kilt? ›

The green, blue, and red tartan was designed by The Scottish Tartan Authority and symbolizes the King's longstanding support for Scottish culture and dress. In fact, many of the images of King Charles donning a kilt take place in Scotland, specifically Balmoral (such as his early birthday portraits).

The design is based on the famed Balmoral tartan which is said to have been designed by Prince Albert and was frequently worn by the late Queen when she was in Scotland.

Although the royal's history with kilts dates back 170 years, Prince William appears to be reluctant to wearing kilts — he has not been seen wearing one since he was a child — because he does not like them, a royal commentator has suggested.

Fittingly named the 'King Charles III tartan', the green, blue and red textile was designed in honour of the coronation and recognises His Majesty's 'strong support in preserving the culture and traditions of Highland dress and Scottish tartans'.

King Charles is a vocal supporter of the UK's regional languages and has also spoken some Scots Gaelic.
