Summary: Chapter Thirteen

Lily and Ryle fall deeper in love. They make love and talk about their families. Ryle says his mother is overbearing, judgmental, and religious, but Ryle smiles when he talks about her. His father is a psychiatrist.

Chapter 14 Summary

Tipsy, Lily laughs when Ryle's hand gets burned, and he drops the casserole. In response, he shoves her and she runs into a cabinet door handle. Lily immediately knows his reaction was excessive, stating, “My tears, my heart, my laughter, my soul. Shattered like broken glass” (185).

Summary: Chapter Sixteen

Atlas apologizes to Lily for saying that she was acting like her mother. He gives her a present he bought for her three years ago, hoping he'd run into her some time. He takes a sticky note from her desk and writes his phone number on it. He says to call him if Ryle ever hurts her again.

Chapter 17 Summary

He had left for Boston and his visit cheers up Lily, who had been depressed at losing him. Atlas will soon leave for the military, but he promises that he will find Lily when he gets out. They sleep together and Atlas gives her a Boston souvenir magnet.

Lily is confused, and Ryle explains that they had an older brother who died in childhood. After an awkward silence, the night continues without issue. Lily has more fun with them than she can remember having, and at the end of the night she tells Allysa she's her best friend.

Ryle is upset but agrees to get help. Meanwhile, Atlas tells Sutton that he wants custody of Josh but encourages her to meet them once a week for dinner, so she can still have a relationship with both her sons. Six months after they began dating, Atlas and Lily move in together. A few years later, they get married.

Summary: Chapter Eighteen

Lily is nervous about meeting Ryle's parents. He tries to reassure her, but she's worried they will judge her for “living in sin” with their son. His mom overhears this concern and starts to tease and hug Lily. Lily is very happy to be accepted into Ryle and Allysa's family.

Summary: Chapter Twenty-Three. Lily comes home after spending time with the baby to find Ryle standing in the dark in the kitchen, holding the Boston magnet that Atlas gave her for her 16th birthday. He seems strange, and Lily can't tell if he's upset or wants to have sex.
