Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (1)

Wondering what the differences are between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca? You’re in the right place!

Congratulations! You found your way to one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets – the coast of Oaxaca. This region of the Pacific Coast is still widely unknown but becoming popular due to the incredible natural wonders found all along this Mexican state.

When looking at a map, you might think that since Puerto Escondido and Huatulco are geographically rather close together, they are probably similar destinations, right?

Wrong! The truth is these two coastal towns are complete opposites in terms of things to do and the local vibe.

This article will compare Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido and help you decide which is the best fit for your winter holiday!

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (2)

What Is Huatulco Known For?

Huatulco is slightly less known to internationals than Puerto Escondido, but mostly I find that the demographic of people who have heard of PE or Huatulco varies the most! Compared to Puerto Escondido, Huatulco is most known for:

#1 – The Beaches

Huatulco is probably most well known for being home to more than 36 beaches that are accessible along its pacific shores. Aside from the sheer number, what sets Huatulco Beaches apart from Puerto Escondido beaches is that many of the Huatulco beaches offer fantastic snorkelling, free-diving and scuba diving, in addition to the surfing or just plain old sunbathing that you can find in PE as well.

Another great thing about Huatulco beaches is that many of them are secluded or unserviced, meaning empty of any developments!

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (3)

#2 – Sustainability & National Park

One neat thing that sets Huatulco apart from Puerto Escondido or other resort towns in Mexico is that Huatulco has been built around sustainable tourism.

While not perfect, Huatulco has many more building and development regulations in place to protect its water and wildlife. It is also home to one of the largest national parks in Mexico!

Puerto Escondido doesn’t have the same protections. In 2022, a group got together to stop a major development from taking place in Puerto Escondido.

The specs of the building would have destroyed a sea turtle habitat and affected the wind patterns which are key to producing Puerto Escondido’s famous surf curl.

#3 Family-Friendly

Apart from the ocean, Huatulco’s small-time vibe and family friendliness is probably the biggest difference between Hux and PE.

For better or worse, Huatulco is a small and quiet coastal town making it popular with families and retirees. But we are not completely deprived of nightlife!

What Is Puerto Escondido Known For?

Puerto Escondido continues to increase in popularity for many reasons, but here are the big ones!

#1 Surfing

Puerto Escondido’s main claim to fame is the pipeline that runs along Zicatela beach. The peak season for expert waves is in the summer, from about April to August. But you can still catch a great wave in the shoulder season from September to November, and avoid the crowds!

The best waves for intermediate surfers and surfing lessons can be found at La Punta, the far southern edge of Playa Zicatela.

#2 Nightlife and Food Scene

I will be the first to admit that this was my first priority when visiting Puerto Escondido! While I love living in Huatulco, one of the things about living in a small town is that the food scene is lacking in variety. I have been spoiled by living in Vancouver and traveling so much so eating a variety of cuisines is something I sorely miss!

The demographic that visits and immigrate to Puerto Escondido tend to be a younger, surf/digital nomad-type crowd. PE offers way more food and bars than Huatulco has yet.

In fact, the entire street of Alejandro Cardena Peralta in the Zicaleta strip is devoted to restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and artisan shops.

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (6)

#3 Lagoons and Bioluminescence

Puerto Escondido is surrounded by lagoons. Aside from the fun usual wildlife found in these freshwater reservoirs, many of them are also home to a special type of phytoplankton that illuminates when moved.

Tours can be taken from Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, but it’s much less time driving to go from Puerto Escondido.

Wow!!!! This is all could say about this tour. The lagoon is pitch black but once you hit that really warm thermal water the water lights up just like advertised!!! I have no words ! This is probably the best night tour I’ve ever done. They give you around 40 min to swim in the warm water and it isn’t deep at all. I could touch the mud at the bottom. I highly recommend this tour!

Huatulco vs. Puerto Escondido Beaches

Since Puerto Escondido and Huatulco are on the same coastline, their beaches are probably pretty similar, right? Wrong! The southern orientation of Huatulco makes the beaches there uniquely protected from the wildness of the Pacific waters, while Puerto Escondido beaches experience stronger waters and the magic that comes with them!

Best Huatulco Beaches

It would be tough to find a place that can compete with Huatulco in this department. Huatulco has some of the best beaches in Mexico, and way more beaches than Puerto Escondido does.

The quiet Huatulco beaches are great for snorkeling and scuba diving, or just cooling down!

✔️ Playa Maguey Beach

Maguey is one of my favourite beaches in Huatulco because it offers something for everyone.

The bay has great scuba dive sites here, easy snorkeling, and is easily accessible from the town of La Crucecita.

The beach itself has restaurants on one half and virgin sand on the other, so you can be independent or enjoy the restaurants.

All this makes it the perfect destination for groups – because everyone will find something they want!

Maguey is also one of the few beaches you can drive right up to, making it easily accessible for anyone with a mobility aid or carrying a lot of beach supplies!

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (8)

✔️ San Agustín Bay and Beach

San Agustín Bay is one of the 9 Bays of Huatulco and one of my favourite beaches to visit if I’m going for the whole day. While Maguey is easy to access from town, San Agustín is at the very edge of the Bays of Huatulco and takes about 40 minutes to get there by car.

San Agustín has the best snorkelling in Huatulco, and I always enjoy some freshly caught oysters here when they are in season!

🏄‍♀️ La Bocana Beach

Since this is a competition between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, we have to through a surfing beach into the mix! While Puerto Escondido is more known for its surfable waves, Huatulco and the areas just outside the region have some great surf as well.

La Bocana is the last beach in the Bahias de Huatulco before Copalita starts. It’s popular with surfers around sunrise, and with non-surfers who like to enjoy a gorgeous sunrise as well!

Best Puerto Escondido Beaches

This is an easy category because there are only a few main beaches in PE, enough that you could easily visit them all but still have a variety of activities. Here are the top 3!

🏄‍♀️Playa Zicatela

This is the big one! Playa Zicatela is the main attraction of Puerto Escondido. This long beach is perfect for surfers yes, but on the sand you will find all kinds of activities! Horseback riding, sky-diving, sun-bathers, you name it!

In the evenings, many people gather along the sand or at one of the many beach restaurants and bars to experience the incredible sunsets over Zicatela Beach.

🏖️ Playa Principal

The next most important beach in Puerto is Playa Principal. This beach bridges the tourist Zicatela strips with the town of Puerto Escondido and is where you will find most of the boats for the many boat tours.

While Huatulco also has some amazing wildlife, Puerto Escondido’s wilder waters and more northern locations see some pelagics like whales and orcas a little earlier in the season.

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (11)

🪸 Puerto Angelito

Puerto Angelito is the crowd favourite at Puerto Escondido. Located in a quiet bay, this is the best beach in the area for sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing for the day. Because it is one of the few areas with safe waters, this beach can get pretty crowded on the weekends with kids and families.

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido Activities

There is plenty to do along Oaxaca’s coast, both on and off the beaches! Here is the best of what these Mexican pueblas have to offer.

Best Things To Do In Huatulco

Aside from hitting up one of the many, many beaches in Huatulco, here are some other awesome things to do with your friends or family in Huatulco.

⛵Take a Tour of the 9 Bays & Huatulco National Park

Did you know Huatulco is home to one of the largest national parks in Mexico? The Parque National de Huatulco protects both land and sea and is home to all kinds of incredible wildlife!

You can take a tour by boat of the bays, or combine it with an all or half-day snorkel or dive tour to really get to absorb the natural beauty of Huatulco!

🤿 Try Scuba Diving

While the Caribbean attracts scuba divers from all over the world, fewer know of the underwater wonders of the pacific.

Despite not having the same level of visibility of the Caribbean waters, the great thing about the pacific ocean is that it is full of life!

Huatulco has more than 50 dive sites to offer, so whether you are brand-new or a seasoned diver, Huatulco has a dive site for you!

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (13)

⛰️ Visit the Mountains

Within an hour from Huatulco will take you into the rainforest of the Sierra Madre mountains and all they have to offer. Waterfalls, hikes, and coffee, oh my!

There are two main waterfall adventures from Huatulco, Las Brisas/Cascadas Magicas, and Copalita falls. Both are great all-day adventures, but Las Brisas is my personal favourite!

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (14)

Best Things To Do In Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido has its own unique set of offerings for visitors and long-term residents! While only a short distance away, the activities vary greatly from Huatulco’s small-town offerings.

🏄‍♂️ Take a Surfing Lesson

You can’t visit one of the best surfing locations in North America and not hit the water! Whether you rent a board, take your own, or join a lesson, going surfing while in Puerto Escondido is an absolute must!

Such an amazing surf experience. Great instructors who truly guide you to learning the waves. Overall, a great time and would definitely return.

🌮Eat!

While Huatulco offers a pretty good selection of restaurants, it can feel like slim pickings when coming from a big city. One of my favourite reasons to visit Puerto Escondido is to enjoy the food!

Because of the younger, more diverse crowd that PE attracts, the food scene is spectacular. In addition to the Mexican staples, you will find all kinds of Asian and fusion foods, hand-crafted burger joints, and awesome options for food sensitivities and diets like vegan or gluten sensitivities.

Most of these restaurants can be found in the Zicatela district, but the downtown also has hidden gems like this cafe we discovered up on the hill.

🐌 See the Bioluminescence or Take a Nature Tour

The lagoons around Puerto Escondido are famous for the bioluminescent plankton that inhabit the waters. Taking a nighttime tour of the bioluminescene lagoons is one of my favourite things to do in Puerto Escondido!

In addition to this nocturnal wonder, the lagoons are home to birds, turtles, fish, and even crocodiles. They are full of life day and night!

In the ocean, the waters bring migrating Humpback whales, dolphins, and even Orcas can be spotted off the coast in the winter.

Nearby in Mazunte, crocodiles enjoy their restored mangrove habitat in La Ventanilla.

If you enjoy the quieter life of birdwatching, there are many hidden places only a local guide can take you!

Whatever you enjoy, Puerto Escondido has a nature tour for you! The wilds of the Oaxacan coast are a great place to discover wildlife that you might never see again.

Huatulco vs. Puerto Escondido Weather

Now, here is where things get interesting! Considering Huatulco and Puerto Escondido are located less than 200km apart, the difference in the surrounding geography and weather patterns is incredible.

Huatulco Weather

Huatulco is uniquely located on the Mexican coastline. While it is on the west coast, Huatulco actually faces south due to the formation of the coastline and the bays.

This structure creates a little safe haven that protects the Bays of Huatulco from the majority of inclement weather.

Like many southern locations, Huatulco is most commonly visited in the winter by Canadians and Americans looking for relief from the long northern winters. But in my experience, there is no bad time to visit Huatulco.

Huatulco is similar in temperatures to Puerto Escondido, they are both very hot locations! However, Huatulco feels hotter than Puerto Escondido because it does not get as much wind.

Huatulco’s rainy season is from late May to early November. It rains the most from July – September with infrequent rains in the shoulder seasons

A unique thing about Huatulco is that it does not rain at all in the dry season, even a short shower from December – April is extremely rare.

The weather is changing though, as climate change worsens weather patterns are getting more severe, and coastal communities are the most affected.

In 2022, Huatulco was hit by hurricane Agatha, the first hurricane to make landfall in 16 years, and it devastated many local communities.

The summer continued with much heavier rains than usual that did not affect the bays very much, but greatly affected the smaller mountain communities that do not have the infrastructure to handle the water.

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (19)

Puerto Escondido Weather

Again, because PE is so close to Huatulco the weather patterns are fairly similar, with some distinctions!

Puerto Escondido experiences much more wind and currents than Huatulco does. Because it doesn’t have the same protections, PE is exposed to the open seas and all the things that come with it.

Puerto Escondido gets more wildlife because of it (think big fish!), but also colder, more violent waters and winds.

While these conditions make snorkeling and diving less desirable than in Huatulco, the unique wind conditions are what make Puerto Escondido a top surfing destination!

The winds also make Puerto Escondido much cooler than Huatulco, keeps the humidity at bay, and the air fresh. Huatulco is just hot, all the time and does not cool down much in the evenings like Puerto Escondido does.

Best Places To Stay

If you plan to travel to Huatulco or Puerto Escondido (or both!), you are going to need some places to stay! Here are my top picks for each location.

Huatulco Accommodations

The biggest difference between accommodations in Huatulco and Puerto is the vacancy rate. Both regions are small towns on the Oaxacan coast and have a few chain hotels, but mostly boutique hotels or vacation apartments and house rentals are available.

Puerto Escondido built a lot more large hotels to anticipate tourism than Huatulco has, so it can be a little easier to find accommodations in PE. Huatulco books up incredibly fast!

🏰Celeste Residences

One of the most beautiful places to rent in Huatulco is Celeste Residences in Tejonicto bay. It is quiet, well built looked after, and has a lovely little private beach. The rooms are designed as suites so you can be somewhat self-sufficient, but you might not want to cook when there are great restaurants built-in and a private chef available to cook for you!

🌟Rating: 9.6/10 |📍 Sector/Area:Tejoncito| 🏨 View onBooking.com

If you are looking for privacy and tropical bliss, look no further than Celeste Residences in Tejoncito bay. This 3-bedroom apartment boasts access to a private beach, spectacular views, and is welcoming of both children and pets which makes this a great option for families!

The private beach, the comfort or the condo, great beds, bathroom, kitchen and terrace view. All staff are very nice and friendly. The gym and spa were good as well.

🏨Hotel Castillo & Beach Club

Hotel Castillo in Santa Cruz is where affordability meets the perfect location. A 3-star hotel with excellent reviews, Hotel Castillo is located across the street from the Santa Cruz marina.

It is within walking distance to Santa Cruz beach and all of the amenities of that sector. The hotel also has a beach club in Chahue Bay that they provide transportation to on a regular schedule.

🔵Hostal Azul y Blanco

Looking for a hostal in the heart of it all? Hostal Azul y Blanco is in the heart of La Crucecita and an ideal location for budget travellers. You can easily walk to all of the night life, shops, and food stores located in the town, but its set on a side street so it is quieter at night for sleeping.

It is also right near the bus stop for easy transport to Santa Cruz!

Puerto Escondido Accommodations

PE has SO many options for places to stay in a variety of styles, so it can be a little overwhelming! Here are a couple of places I suggest, depending on what you are looking for.

🌴 Hotel Santa Fe

🌟Rating: 8.6/10 |📍 Sector/Area:Zicatela| 🏨 View onBooking.com

Hotel Santa Fe is one of the more luxurious accommodation options in Puerto Escondido. Ideally located on the beach in between Zicatela and Playa Principal, this 4-star hotel has it all! Gorgeous pools, access to the best of Puerto, and gorgeous rooms with all the amenities.

Wow! I lived in Puerto for awhile so I knew about the excellent restaurant and cafe. I now live in Oaxaca but visit frequently and had always wanted to stay here: I’m so glad I did! It’s a true classic and everything from the grounds to the cleaning staff was perfect. The room had a beautiful painting on the wall and there is an interesting sculpture in the courtyard/pool. Beautiful unobstructed view, excellent food and service in the bar/restaurant and overall just pure Mexican/Oaxaca beauty and hospitality. It was also quiet which I really appreciate. I’ll be back!

🏨Casa Mia

🌟Rating: 9.2/10 |📍 Sector/Area:Chahue Bay| 🏨 View onBooking.com

When I visited Puerto Escondido in 2022 this is where my mum and I stayed. The location of Casa Mia is ideal, near Playa Principal but away from the touristy Zicatela zone, but close enough to walk pretty much everywhere!

We walked down Zicatela beach multiple times, but also spent a lot of time enjoying the downtown, especially the night markets!

The staff were exceptionally fun and friendly and we really enjoyed our time here!

🏠Casa Daikiri Hostal

Because of the younger crowd Puerto Escondido attracts, they have a lot more hostels to choose from than Huatulco. One of the best is Casa Daikiri in Zicatela, just 2 blocks from the beach! Travelers love the vibe, the group activities the hostel plans, and of course the perfect location on Zicatela. As an added bonus, Casa Daikiri is pet-friendly!

Everything at Casa Daikiri is awesome! The place is extremely clean, close to centro and super cool, with one of the most refreshing pools. The staff is super friendly and very helpful – Thank you guys for everything! Best part yet is it’s super pet-friendly and only charge an extra $50MXN a night per mascota. Highly recommend! We will definitely be back to stay again.

Safety Concerns in Huatulco and Puerto Escondido

Thanks to decades of smear campaigns, the first question on a lot of people’s minds when they hear “Mexico” is “Is Mexico Safe?”. But I think this is the wrong question, safe compared to what? Is the US a really safe place?

The reality is that there are some dangerous parts of Mexico that it is smarter to avoid, but I would say the same thing about parts of Canada, and definitely about parts of the US. In general, Mexico is a great and safe place to be!

Is Huatulco Safe For Tourists?

So is Huatulco safe to visit? Absolutely! Huatulco has a safety rating of 85, which is very high! Personally, I think it should be higher because I disagree with this site’s assessment of the risk for taxis and mugging. The safest way to travel in Huatulco is by taxi, and it is very affordable too!

As Huatulco becomes bigger and more popular, instances of petty theft are rising, but still low.

I have heard a few stories this year of people having their things stolen or destroyed, but just like anywhere I am sure it happens sometimes. Personally, I often leave my things on the beach and go swimming with no issue.

The greatest risk is of course if you are out drinking. Intoxicated people are easy targets for pick-pocketing and other petty theft, so if you decide to go and enjoy the nightlife in Huatulco, make sure you only take what you need and are careful with your wallet or purse!

Earthquakes

One of the things that can make Huatulco feel unsafe for tourists is the earthquakes. Oaxaca is situated on 3 fault lines, so we are in a very active part of the world!

However, don’t let the “temblors” put you off, most of our seismic activity falls under 6 on the Richter scale, so the most you feel is a little rumble similar to a large truck driving by. Thankfully Huatulco rarely gets destructive earthquakes.

The last quake to do damage was in June 2020, it did some damage to houses but no one was hurt thankfully! The town of La Crucecita is especially well-built to withstand the shakes.

Is Puerto Escondido Safe For Tourists?

Similar to Huatulco, PE is a tourist city so the people and governments try to maintain their reputation as best as possible. Crime is low compared to other places in the world, or even in Mexico, but the difference in popularity and demographics make Escondido slightly more risky for petty theft than Huatulco.

Puerto Escondido is widely considered to be a safe place to live and visit. If you are a nervous traveler, staying in the tourist areas like Zicatela can be more comforting because they tend to have better sidewalks, street lighting, and infrastructure to help you feel safer at night.

Because of the higher volume of people in PE, I am less comfortable leaving my things on the beach than I am in Huatulco.

You may want to bring along a beach safe like this one I use , or a waterproof bag to swim with for extra care of your things. I like the safe because it’s great for staying in hostels too, and with the more violent waves in Puerto I am more nervous to lose a wearable water bag.

How to Get to Huatulco and Puerto Escondido

Luckily, it’s so easy to get to both Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, I am going to cover them both in this section!

While Puerto Escondido does have its own airport, it’s a regional airport so it’s more likely that you will fly into Huatulco International Airport if you are visiting either Huatulco or Puerto Escondido.

Regardless of where you are going, you will fly into Huatulco International Airport and then arrange for transportation from the airport to your accommodations.

#1 Hotel Transfer- the easiest and most affordable way to get from the Huatulco airport to your hotel

If you are staying in a hotel or resort on the coast of Oaxaca, it is very likely your hotel provides free transfers, so be sure to look into your booking confirmation and arrange your arrival time in advance.

If you booked through the hotel or a package like WestJet Vacations, your transfer will be standing outside the airport gates with a sign so you know exactly where to go!

#2 Pre-booked Private Van or Taxi – the easiest transportation option from the Huatulco airport

It is really easy to book your own transportation from the airport in advance, which I highly recommend if you are travelling:

  • as a group
  • with a lot of luggage or sporting equipment like a surfboard or golf clubs
  • or if you just don’t like waiting for other options!
Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (25)

#3 Taxi from the Airport

When you step off the plane in Huatulco there will be plenty of taxis waiting to take you to Huatulco or Puerto Escondido, but be prepared to pay a premium for not booking in advance!

A taxi from La Crucecita to the airport costs $250 pesos, but a taxi from the airport to La Crucecita costs $500. So it definitely pays to arrange in advance!

#4 Take the bus – the cheapest way to get from the Huatulco Airport to Huatulco

Sorry PE folks, this one is just for Huatulco peeps. There is a bus that runs from Santa Maria Huatulco to the airport, La Crucecita, and Santa Cruz. The stop is just outside the airport on the other side of the highway and takes about 8-10 minutes to walk from the airport exit. This option is best if you are on a tight budget and don’t have much luggage.

From the airport exit, follow the paths straight ahead to leave the airport. Walk down the road, and you will see this sign.

Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Which coastal city is best for your 2024 Winter Holiday? 2023 (26)

Near where you see the Pemex sign there is a grass roof, that is the bus stop! Please use extreme caution when crossing the street, it’s a busy road!

#5 Take a Colectivo – the cheapest way to get to Puerto Escondido from the Huatulco Airport

Similar to how you would take the bus, you can take a colectivo to Puerto Escondido from the same location.

Cross the street as you would to go to the bus, but instead of heading to the thatched roof, go slightly to the right where there is a parking lot of taxis. These are the colectivos!

You will most likely have to take one colectivo to Pochutla, and then another one to Puerto Escondido from there, but if there is a group you could probably get a car to take you straight to Puerto.

Note that ability to speak some Spanish is a must for this method of transit!

Want to visit both? Learn how to travel between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco here.

Shev’s Summary: Huatulco Vs Puerto Escondido

So, where will you be headed this winter? Obviously, I am a little biased toward Huatulco because, well, I live here! But the best part about these two locations is they are close enough together that if you have more than a week, you could visit both.

If you are most interested in a beach holiday, with lots of snorkeling and swimming in the sea, Huatulco is definitely the place for you. However, if you like your holiday to consist of fun-filled days and dancing away the nights, then you would feel right at home in Puerto Escondido.

Wherever you end up, have a wonderful holiday!
