The rules were part of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2017 brought forth in June last year. Under the Weights and Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules, all packaged goods have to fulfill certain essential requirements such as providing certain necessary information on the contents of the package, such as its weight or volume, the name and address of the manufacturer, the date of manufacture, and in case of food packages, the best before date and, of course, the maximum retail price (MRP).

As per the Weights & Measures Act & Rules (of which Consumer Protection is a part), it is illegal to sell any packaged item without the MRP (inclusive of all taxes). For imported goods, it is also mandatory to declare the following :

1. Name & Full address of the Importer

2. Month/Year of Import

3. Telephone number & e-mail address for Consumer Greivances

The penalties for non-compliance are pretty steep and include jail terms.
