What Is Formal Attire for a Wedding?

"Formal wedding attire sits between co*cktail and black tie on the wedding dress code scale. It's slightly more elevated than co*cktail attire and a touch less dressy than a black-tie nuptial," says Alex Rivera, a stylist at Stitch Fix, a personal styling service. Formal wedding attire (synonymous with black-tie optional attire) offers more flexibility than black tie, so dressy separates and dresses that hit above the ankle are acceptable, as well as fitted, darker-hued suits paired with a crisp white button-down and tie, adds Rivera.

While shopping for formal wedding outfits, start by considering the venue and season. "These two important details will help provide an idea for the ambiance, the couple's personal taste, and ensure you've dressed appropriately for the occasion," explains Rivera. For example, for summer events, lighter fabrics, brighter colors and shorter hems are common for formal attire. On the flipside—if you're attending a winter wedding—darker shades, thicker fabrics and longer sleeves and hems are the way to go. In summary, prioritize seasonally appropriate pieces that are elevated and fancy, but still feel like you.

Unlike black-tie attire, you have much more flexibility when it comes to colors, embellishments and hem lengths. "Don't be afraid to have a little fun with your fashion either through a fun color or playful print," says Bridal Stylist Gabrielle Hurwitz. "A knee-length dress, midi dress, or even a flowy maxi dress are all appropriate; I also love the idea of a jumpsuit, suit or a patterned suit or a tuxedo with a standard necktie rather than a bow tie." As for accessories, a "colorful shoe, patterned tie, statement piece of jewelry or a fun pair of sunglasses (if the wedding is outdoors)" are all ways to add personality to your ensemble, according to Hurwitz.

Overall, pick an outfit that you truly love and feel your best in, while still being respectful of the couple's attire request. As for colors to avoid for formal weddings, steer clear of "white, ivory, cream, or champagne-colored dresses and light-colored suits," continues Rivera. You should also avoid pieces that may read as too casual, such as a "cotton sundress or sports coat with chino pants," advises Hurwitz.

    FAQs

Here's What Formal Wedding Attire Actually Means (With Options You Can Shop Now!)? ›

The “option” if you will is to go with a very nice dark suit. Navy is my favorite, but black works great too! However, for women, formal attire, black tie, white tie and black tie optional all mean beautiful gowns. There are several options to choose from when it comes to formal wedding attire.

What does formal wedding attire mean? ›

    Formal Wedding

As the name suggests, it allows more flexibility than a black-tie dress code. Men can wear tuxedos or formal dark suits, and women can wear anything from evening gowns to dressy co*cktail attire.

How do you describe a formal dress code for a wedding? ›

The wedding party will be in formal wedding attire, and it's optional for all guests. For men, they should wear a classic suit or tux including a tie, and formal evening wear (floor-length dresses or evening pantsuits) for women.

What is the dress code for formal attire? ›

Black tie refers to a very specific type of dress, with tuxedos and bow ties for men and floor-length gowns for women. The term “formal attire” is more general, relating to smart suits, shirts, dresses, blouses, and other items. Somewhat paradoxically, general formal attire is less formal than black tie.

What is the most formal wedding dress code? ›

White-tie wedding attire is the most formal of all dress codes. Also called full dress, white tie attire is often reserved for elegant events like state dinners, royal banquets and very formal weddings. Do I have to wear a long dress to a formal wedding? ›

Traditionally women are expected to wear a floor length evening dress to a formal wedding. Often a sophisticated and dressy co*cktail dress is also appropriate, however if the bride is traditional we recommend a floor length dress. A full length dress means that the ankle is not visible.

Can I wear a short dress to a formal wedding? ›

Women can wear a short dress or elegant separates—as long as they're still dressy. This is an ideal occasion to break out a little black dress. Avoid styles like sundresses, which are too casual for this type of evening event.

Does formal attire require a tie? ›

Formal wear will almost always include a dark colored suit (tuxedo) and bow tie, whereas semi-formal dress for men is a bit more flexible. Try a lighter colored suit, or a blazer and slacks with a sharp belt. Semi-formal wear can include a tie, but doesn't always have to, and shoes can be smart or relaxed.

Does a formal dress have to be long? ›

However, formal gowns are typically floor-length or slightly longer, reaching the ankles or even sweeping the floor. Some may also opt for tea-length gowns, which fall between the knee and ankle. What to wear to a formal wedding as a guest? ›

Simply put, women should wear a formal, floor-length evening gown—no exceptions—with jewelry, heels, and an elegant clutch. Men are required to wear a tuxedo with tails, a formal white shirt, a vest, a bow tie, white or gray gloves, and formal footwear, such as derby shoes or oxfords.

Can you wear a co*cktail dress to a formal wedding? ›

    Formal Attire Dress Code

What to wear: A tuxedo or dark two- or three-piece suit. Women can choose between a chic, knee-length or midi-length co*cktail dress and a full-length dress.

Do you have to wear a suit to a formal wedding? ›

Tuxedos are optional, but they will expect a full formal suit at the very least. Not sure if it's formal? If the women are still planning on long dresses, assume it's formal. A wide variety of weddings could be formal, but they typically lean towards traditional.

Can a woman wear pants to a formal wedding? ›

Totally fine! Just make sure they're dressy enough for the nuptials. Start with tailored trousers and a polished blouse, or make things easy for yourself by grabbing a matching blazer. Pant suits are a great way to go, or you can coordinate the color of your pants with your top and have a monochrome moment.

Can you wear a regular suit to a formal wedding? ›

DO. Wear a dark suit or tuxedo: For a formal wedding, dark suits, such as black, charcoal grey, or navy blue, are most appropriate. Wear a bow tie or necktie: Unlike with black-tie attire, a bow tie is not required. You may wear a bow tie or necktie.

The term can have various interpretations, but is generally accepted to mean that tuxedos are preferred, but not mandatory. Formal suits are accepted, but darker colors are still the norm.

What is the point of formal attire? ›

While some may argue that a formal dress code restricts individuality, it can actually enhance confidence and self-expression. A well-tailored suit or professional attire not only presents a polished appearance but also instills a sense of self-assurance in individuals.
