Frequently Asked Questions - Hyundai (2024)

There are nearly 4 million model year 2011-2022 vehicles now eligible to receive the free anti-theft software upgrade.

The upgrade can be performed at any Hyundai dealership and takes less than one hour for installation.

The software upgrade modifies certain vehicle control modules on Hyundai vehicles equipped with standard “turn-key-to-start” ignition systems. As a result, locking the doors will set the factory alarm and activate an “ignition kill” feature so the vehicle cannot be started when subjected to the popularized theft mode.

An engine immobilizer is an electronic security device that prevents a vehicle from starting unless the correct key or fob is used.

If your Hyundai vehicle has a push-button start or was produced after November 2021, it has an engine immobilizer. If your vehicle has a standard “turn-key-to-start” ignition system, please input your VINhereto determine if it is eligible for the software upgrade.

Some 2011-2022 model year vehicles without engine immobilizers cannot accommodate the software upgrade. As part of the proposed class action settlement, Hyundai will reimburse these owners for their purchase of steering wheel locks and other anti-theft devices, such as an alarm kit.

Hyundai and AAA insurers have collaborated on a program to offer insurance options in most states for eligible affected owners and lessees. Customers can visit AAA.com/insurance to receive a quote.

Under the program, AAA insurers will issue new and renewal policies for eligible affected Hyundai customers in most states, with the exception of those states where AAA does not off insurance (Alaska, Massachusetts, Washington).Learn more about this program here. AAA insurers are independently operated.

The proposed class action settlement relates to model year 2011-2022 Hyundai vehicles (“class vehicles”) manufactured without an engine immobilizer. The Court is expected to consider preliminary approval of the settlement in August or September. Following preliminary approval, current and past owners and lessees of class vehicles will be mailed notice of their eligibility within approximately 60 days, so likely before the end of the year, and may begin submitting claims for theft-related losses at that time. If the Court grants final approval of the settlement, these claims will be reviewed and processed for payment at the close of what is a standard 180-day claim period, likely sometime the middle of next year.
