Freckles, Birthmarks, and Moles: What’s the Difference? - Key West, FL (1)

There are many types of “beauty marks” that can develop on the skin. This includes birthmarks, freckles, and moles. Many patients in the Islamorada and Key West, FL areas may have difficulty understanding which is which. The team at Keys Dermatology can help patients understand which type of beauty mark they have and what can be done about them!

· Freckles. Freckles are specific skin cells that contain extra pigmentation, and they are often a sign of sun exposure. Some patients who have freckles may notice that they are much darker during the summer months when spending time outdoors.

· Birthmarks. A birthmark is a mark that is present when an individual is born. They may be pigmented areas of skin or clusters of vascular lesions.

· Moles. Moles are also pigmentated lesions, but may look different from one another. Some are flat while others are raised. They are typically smaller in size, smaller than the size of a pencil eraser, and may be any color, including black, brown, or pink. They can develop anywhere on the body.

When should I be worried about a mark on my skin?

Many patients have heard that skin cancer is an easy-to-spot growth. Many patients may visit a dermatologist for an evaluation if they have moles. However, most are benign. It’s when changes occur to existing moles that there may be reason for concern. At Keys Dermatology, we recommend all patients have skin cancer screenings at least once a year, and call their dermatologist if they form any growth of concern in-between visits. With early detection and diagnosis, many patients can successfully survive skin cancer.
