· Birthmarks. A birthmark is a mark that is present when an individual is born. They may be pigmented areas of skin or clusters of vascular lesions.
· Moles. Moles are also pigmentated lesions, but may look different from one another. Some are flat while others are raised. They are typically smaller in size, smaller than the size of a pencil eraser, and may be any color, including black, brown, or pink. They can develop anywhere on the body.
When should I be worried about a mark on my skin?
Many patients have heard that skin cancer is an easy-to-spot growth. Many patients may visit a dermatologist for an evaluation if they have moles. However, most are benign. It’s when changes occur to existing moles that there may be reason for concern. At Keys Dermatology, we recommend all patients have skin cancer screenings at least once a year, and call their dermatologist if they form any growth of concern in-between visits. With early detection and diagnosis, many patients can successfully survive skin cancer.
