First, Second, Third Cinema (2024)

“Towards a third cinema” is a manifesto written bySolanas and Getino. They purpose a new organization of the world of cinema broken down into three categories; first, second, and third cinema. First cinema being hollywood, and second cinema being European art film which rejects hollywoods conventions but focuses on the auteur director. Now, in the time of the creation and formation of third world countries, a seed for third cinema was planted. These countries, already inhabited by natives, were being colonized bycapitalistcountries.“Film was consumer good and seemed in favor of anti-historicism” (2).Being overturned by differentforeignpowers, the natives weren’t left with a voice, and the Third Cinema, is where their voice came out. This became a type of cinema to show the truth from the eyes of the repressed, as they choose to display it through the same medium as the higher classes choose to show theirfantasies andstories. There could be the idea that because there are two different types of peoples find themselves together on land, both claiming it to be theirs, that they could share their cultures and ideas, and the land with each other. Of course the way we know humans to work is to develop a divide between the surpressed and oppressed. In Latin America in mid nineties was being lost to European and American cultures. Their voice, culture, land, economy, and business was being stolen away from them and to respond to that, they enabled the use of the Third Cinema.

After watching the majority of “La Hora de los Hornos” is it obvious to you how this film is not made for art purposes, but to exist as part of their revolution?

The set up of the movie begun with graphics and words flashing and beating on the screen cut up by clips of police brutality of civilians. The film is then broken down throughout into sections with titles, each about the revolution. Do you think that some of the raw and to the point style was overlooked because of this? Do you think this action or organization and the visual style used adds some artistic characteristics to the cinema? And further more, removing it from the realm of Third Cinema?
What can be considered art with subjects such as this? Does the display of information in a traditional and common form of mass communication a slight sell out to the original message? It could be seen as an act that shows the extent of how desperate they are, as thevulnerablefighters turn to and a method used by their enemies. There is a quote from the manifesto that reads“How could the public be reached?”, the answer as presented here, is by cinema. We must turn to look at cinema as asimplermeans of communication. Not always as an art form but as a display of information.
