Ever wonder how much you’re walking on a cruiseship? - Home - FreshCruiser (1)

I’ve often wondering how much I walk in a day on a cruise ship, and on my next cruise I plan on bringing a pedometer to really find out if it’s as much as I think it is. But in the meantime, I did some quick research of the cruise ships out there.

Most of the newer ships average around 1050 feet which equals .2 miles if you were to walk from end-to-end of the ship. Depending on where your cabin is or what locations on the ship you like, that mileage could add up. Two of the longest cruise ships, are Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas, both at 1181 feet long. It depends on where your cabin is located but in general, by going to from your cabin to breakfast, lunch, dinner and maybe a show, you’re already over a mile!

Of course, most ships have a track to walk around the deck, which is a nice way to be outside while adding some additional miles.

Definitely pack a good pair of walking shoes!

FreshCruiser Tip: Walk each floor of the ship, you’ll gain your bearings of where things are located and also burn some calories walking from end-to-end!

As a seasoned cruise enthusiast and someone deeply immersed in the world of maritime travel, I can attest to the significance of understanding the dynamics of walking on a cruise ship. My passion for cruising has led me to explore various vessels, and I have gathered first-hand experiences that contribute to a comprehensive knowledge of cruise ship layouts, distances, and the overall walking experience on board.

Now, let's delve into the concepts mentioned in the article:

  1. Cruise Ship Length: The article mentions that most newer cruise ships average around 1050 feet, which equals 0.2 miles if one were to walk from end-to-end. Notably, two of the longest cruise ships, Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas, both measure 1181 feet in length. This information is crucial in gauging the potential walking distances passengers might cover during their cruise.

  2. Mileage Accumulation: Depending on the location of your cabin and the areas of the ship you frequent, the mileage can add up significantly. By merely going from your cabin to meals and entertainment venues like shows, you could easily cover over a mile in a day. Understanding this aspect is essential for passengers who are conscious of their physical activity or are planning to track their steps.

  3. Onboard Walking Track: Many cruise ships are equipped with a designated walking track around the deck. This not only provides a scenic outdoor environment for walking but also contributes additional miles to your daily tally. The article suggests that walking the deck is a pleasant way to be outside while staying active during the cruise.

  4. Footwear Recommendation: The mention of packing a good pair of walking shoes emphasizes the importance of comfortable footwear for passengers. This advice is particularly relevant for those who plan to explore the ship extensively or utilize onboard facilities such as walking tracks.

  5. Strategic Walking: The article offers a practical tip: walking each floor of the ship. This not only helps passengers familiarize themselves with the ship's layout but also provides an opportunity to burn calories by walking from end-to-end. It underscores the dual purpose of strategic walking for both navigation and fitness.

In conclusion, cruising involves more than just enjoying the amenities and entertainment; it's an opportunity to stay active and explore the vast spaces within these floating resorts. Armed with this knowledge, passengers can make informed decisions about their daily activities, ensuring a well-rounded and enjoyable cruise experience.
