Duggar Family's Emotional Quotes About Miscarriages (2024)

Several members of the Duggar family have shared their heartbreaking experiences with pregnancy loss over the years.

In February 2023, Jessa Duggar revealed that she suffered a miscarriage while pregnant with her and husband Ben Seewald’s fifth child. In the emotional YouTube video, titled “Heartbreak Over the Holidays,” the former Counting On star recalled breaking the news of baby No. 5 to her children Spurgeon, Henry, Ivy and Fern in November 2022 before revealing, “I feel like I’ve been more sick this pregnancy than I have with any of mine.”

She went on to share that an ultrasound technician had told her, “The sac looks good. The baby does not,” before tearfully describing how she felt when the news broke that she miscarried. “Nothing could’ve prepared me for the weight of those words at that moment,” she shared, adding, that she “immediately started crying.”

The experience is one three of her sisters have also been through, as Jill Duggar and her husband, Derick Dillard, suffered a miscarriage in October 2021, a few months before welcoming their son Frederick in July 2022. The couple also shares sons Israel and Samuel.

Jinger Duggar — who shares daughters Felicity and Evangeline with husband Jeremy Vuolo — revealed in May 2020 that she had previously had a pregnancy loss before announcing she and Vuolo were expecting their second child. Similarly, Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth shared in July 2019 that she lost her and husband Austin Forsyth’s second child 20 weeks into her pregnancy. Already parents of son Gideon and daughter Evelyn, the couple revealed in October 2022 that they are pregnant with their third kid.

The girls’ mother, Michelle Duggar, has dealt with pregnancy loss of her own in the past. Back in 2011, she announced that she miscarried her and husband Jim Bob Duggar’s 20th child. “We discovered during a routine 19-week ultrasound that our 20th child, who was due in April 2012, passed away recently,” Jim Bob wrote in a letter to Today.com at the time. “We would like to thank everyone for their prayers, emails and outpouring of love … As our whole family is grieving, we also know that God promises to work all things for good in our lives.”

The sibling’s sister-in-law Lauren Duggar (née Swanson) also had a miscarriage in October 2018 and admitted in an exclusive Counting On clip shared by Us Weekly that she and her husband, Josiah Duggar, struggled to conceive following the loss.

“We had been trying to quite a while after the miscarriage, and when we found out we expecting, literally we were shocked,” she stated. “I couldn’t believe it and just cried. We were scared, but life is very precious and we are so thankful for this. We may be a little nervous at times, but we’re just going to be grateful.” The two have since welcomed their daughter Bella in November 2019.

Jill

Jill experienced pregnancy loss in October 2021, just a few months before she and Derek welcomed their third son, Frederick. "We recently found out we were expecting our third baby,” the former TLC star captioned an Instagram video at the time. “We were thrilled! However, a few days later we started miscarrying. We love and miss you River Bliss!”

That same day, Jill and Derek explained the meaning behind the late child's name in a blog post. "One meaning for River is ‘tranquil,’ and here in Arkansas, rivers are often a serene, beautiful escape in nature,” the couple — who tied the knot in 2014 — wrote. "We also like how the River talked about in the Bible (Rev. 22:1-5) represents God’s life-giving presence. The river of life (Holy Spirit), ‘flows from the throne of God,’ and with the tree of life is ‘for the healing of the nations.’ Our baby doesn’t get to live here with us on earth, but is forever with the source of the river of life, in the presence of the Lord!"

Jill reflected on the loss one year later while sharing a pic of herself and her newborn son. "As I sit here this morning nursing our little Freddy, covered in spit up and a little sleep deprived, I feel conflicted with feelings of loss and joy," the post's caption reads. "I miss the moments we never had with River, yet I feel so so thankful for where we are this year holding our sweet little newborn & I do not take for granted what a blessing this journey of motherhood is."

She added: "My heart is also heavy for others who wish so badly to be mamas or have experienced loss and are still praying for their miracle."

Jessa

“Nothing could’ve prepared me for the weight of those words at that moment,” Jessa said in a February 2023 YouTube video revealing she and Ben had lost their fifth child. Noting that she “immediately started crying" upon hearing the news, she added that she and her husband had some time alone while “trying to process the loss [while] sitting there and holding hands and crying.”

Before undergoing a D&C procedure, Jessa shared, “I just wanted to ask, like, ‘Just, can I please have one more ultrasound? Please, somebody check, make sure,'" adding, "I was having all these fears that maybe they got something wrong. … You know it’s irrational, but you just feel scared.”

Jinger

Jinger announced she had suffered a miscarriage while also revealing she and Jeremy were expecting baby No. 2 in May 2020. It was during her pregnancy with daughter Evangeline that the former 19 Kids and Counting star said her bond with sister Joy-Anna strengthened, as her younger sibling experienced pregnancy loss the year prior.

“I talked to Joy a lot in that time,” the Becoming Free Indeed author exclusively told Us Weekly in July 2020. “We grew closer. We were already close, but that relationship even deepened all the more having been through the same thing. [It] was very difficult, but I was grateful for Joy to be able to talk to her. [My sister-in-law] Lauren also just shared such sweet words with me.”

Joy-Anna

Joy-Anna announced via Instagram in July 2019 that she and her husband Austin had lost their baby 20 weeks into her pregnancy. "Today marks one week since we heard these words,” she captioned an emotional black and white photo of the two of them in the hospital. “'So this is your baby’s heart (pointing to the ultrasound screen). I don’t hear a heartbeat or see any movement.’ We had gone in for our 20-week ultrasound and gender reveal. It was a baby girl.”

She continued: "We named her Annabell Elise. Annabell means 'God has favored me,' and Elise means 'God satisfies.' What a precious thing to know that when our daughter opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was the face of Jesus."

One year later, she paid tribute to the child by resharing the photo from her miscarriage announcement, along with a photo of her pregnant belly. "One year without her," Joy-Anna captioned the Instagram post. "It’s been a year since we found out that we lost Annabell."

The caption continued: "I remember leaving our ultrasound appointment, sobbing and wondering how we were ever going to move forward, and so fearful of having to deliver her. It hurts to look back at these pictures and remember the pain and heartbreak, but when I do look back I am so thankful for how far we’ve come... how God has given us more joy, peace, & healing than I ever thought we would have again."
