Does Movado Make Luxury Watches? | WatchMaxx.com Blog (1)

For some reason, there are a lot of questions out there on the internet like “Does Movado make luxury watches?” and “Are Movado watches good?” So we thought we’d step in and answer those things right out of the gate.

Yes, Movado makes luxury watches. Yes, they’re very good.

There, that should be the end of that, don’t you think?

We love Movado men's watches just as much as we love women's Movado watches. We love their out-of-the-box design philosophies, we love their functionality, and we love their high-quality build and durability.

So take a seat and join us for this little love letter to one of our favorite watchmakers. By the end, perhaps you will also be a newly-converted Movado lover.

Let’s start with a bit of history.

Always in Motion - A Brief History of Movado

Movado means “always in motion” in Esperanto, and it’s an apt name on several levels. The designs speak to motion, they’re on the wrists of men and women all around the world, and the company itself has made some major moves since its inception.

It all started way back in 1881 when founder Léopold Achille Isidore Ditesheim started a company named LAI Ditescheim & Freres SA in the Swiss town La Chaux-de-Fonds. We know, that’s a lot of mouthfuls. Perhaps the company’s top brass knew it too, because in 1905 they officially changed the name to Movado.

Movado established a legacy of producing beautiful timepieces over the next 78 years until, in 1983, they were purchased by North American Watch Corp and the headquarters were moved to the USA.

As a dramatic side note, North American Watch Corp was owned at the time by a Cuban-born man named Gedalio Grinberg. Mr. Grinberg came to America as a Cuban refugee fleeing Fidel Castro’s Marxist Revolution in 1960. You could say that he was movado as well for a while there.

Since then, Movado has enjoyed resounding success with their watches while remaining headquartered in Paramus, New Jersey.

Why Are Movado Watches So Cheap/Expensive?

Something that gets commented on a lot are the price points of Movado watches, and it comes from both sides of the aisle.

When you consider that a lot of people are perfectly content with, ahem, cheaper watches purchased from mall kiosks, department stores, and novelty shops (we’re not throwing any shade here, promise), it’s easy to understand why many would consider watches that cost hundreds of dollars an expensive investment.Movado men's watches fill a niche in the market, providing quality and style without the same price tag many other luxury timepieces would demand.

On the other hand, watch collectors are a special kind of people. They recognize beauty in design and craftsmanship, and often feel an almost insatiable hunger to own the most wonderful and coveted timepieces for themselves. This is, of course, the realm where we live and breathe. The way a finely set crystal reflects the light, the smooth sweeping of a second hand powered by a brilliant movement that could only be designed by a true master of their craft...oh, where were we? Ah yes. Watch collectors.

A luxury watch collector will often spend 4-or-5 figures on a new piece for their collection. Tens, sometimes even hundreds of thousands of dollars can be spent on a luxury watch. So when these collectors see a relatively low price point on a Movado watch, they sometimes mistakenly write them off as non-luxury timepieces.

Of course, a true watch collector knows just how wrong that is. Movado watches are beautiful and brilliantly made. Their look is eye-catching, to say the least, and they can be a statement at any occasion. They are luxury in every sense of the word, if maybe a little more accessible form of luxury.

Here, let’s look at some examples.

Examples of Movado Luxury

The Movado Sapphire Black Dial

Just look at this watch. Fashion through minimalism, luxury in design, a common thread among men's Movado watches. The pitch black dial is mesmerizing, and the dark silver hands are barely there, like shadows dancing in the middle of the night.

See that dot at 12 o’clock? That’s The Dot, a signature hallmark of Movado aesthetics. You’ll be seeing that dot a lot when you go on your Movado journey, but you’re not going to see it anywhere else. That’s because this watchmaker is unique in every sense of the word, and their watches are some of the most recognizable out there. It’s the same as the way you know a Rembrandt when you see one, or a Mozart when you hear it.

The Sapphire series features sapphire crystal, and the rubber strap matches the look and fits comfortably on the wrist.

The Movado Bold Evolution Silver-Tone

The luxury on display in women's Movado watches is both subtle and evident. The two-tone dance between silver and gold tones is one that tickles the eyes and inspires an outfit with the way that it slinks into your field of view at the most unexpected moments, while still grabbing the attention you'd expect of gold Movado watches.

This is a Movado Bold watch that is less visually bold, but intensely bold in feel and overall vibe. Every detail has been meticulously crafted into a whole that leaves no doubt about the luxurious state of Movado's masterpieces.

The Movado Bold Black TR90

We put this on here to show that Movado men's watches can do utility when they feel like it. Of course, it’s still going to be fashionable as heck.

With this piece, we get another all-black aesthetic with shocking yellow accents on the dial and 3 subdials. The controls on the side flow with the look and offer all the functionality you would expect, and the leather black band is built to last under any conditions.
