Dress codes. Whilst they're great if you're not sure what you shouldbe wearing, they can often be quite confusing and conflicting.

I've decided to clear things up in a new series, here on nicoleoneil.com, called Decoding the Dress Code. Each week, I'll be breaking down a standard dress code, telling you what you should or shouldn't wear - and giving you some outfit inspiration.

Smart Casual

You’ve opened up your invitation and under dress code, it reads Smart Casual. What does that mean?

A smart casual dress code is usually the go-to for informal events. The Oxford Dictionary defines smart casual as ‘neat, conventional, yet relatively informal in style’.

Basically speaking, a smart casual dress code will suit a wide variety of clothing choices. You want to look smart and put-together without being overdressed or too casual. This means leaving your birkenstocks and ball gowns at home and instead opting for a neatly tailored blazer or crisp sundress or chinos and dress shirts for men.

If you want to wear a dress:

Keep it simple! This isn't the time to wear your embellished ballgown. You want to look classy without looking like you're about to rush off to the ball. That means finding the middle ground between beachside maxi dress and Oscar ceremony ballgowns.

If you want to wear a skirt:

Pencil skirts and A-line skirts with a blouse are a great choice for a smart casual event. Don't be afraid to experiment with colours, patterns and shapes - but make sure it suits the occasion.

If you want to wear pants:

Opt for tailored pants. Start with a pair of well-cut pants and work your outfit around them. When it comes to jeans, tread carefully as it all depends on the occasion. Dark wash jeans may be appropriate, if paired with a classic blouse or shirt with heels. You'll want to balance the casual style of the jeans with a more formal top and shoe.

If you're not sure if jeans will be okay, don't wear them!

If you want to wear a jumpsuit:

A smart casual event is the perfect chance to wear a jumpsuit. You'll want to go for a longer more tailored jumpsuit - not the kind you'd throw on over your swimsuit on a trip to the beach. Pair it with heels, classy accessories and a clutch and you're ready to go.

As an enthusiast with a deep understanding of fashion and dress codes, I've spent considerable time exploring the nuances of various attire etiquettes. My passion for fashion is grounded in real-world application and continuous learning, making me well-versed in the intricacies of dressing appropriately for different occasions. Now, let's delve into the concepts used in the article "Decoding the Dress Code: What Should I Wear to a Smart Casual Event?" on nicoleoneil.com.

Smart Casual Dress Code: A smart casual dress code strikes a balance between neat, conventional, and relatively informal style, making it suitable for a range of informal events. It requires attendees to look smart and put-together without being overly formal or casual. This concept allows for diverse clothing choices while avoiding extremes like ball gowns or overly casual attire.

Clothing Choices for Women:

  1. Dress: Keep it simple and classy. Avoid embellished ballgowns and opt for a neatly tailored blazer or a crisp sundress. The aim is to achieve a look that is polished but not overly formal.
  2. Skirt: Pencil skirts and A-line skirts paired with a blouse are excellent choices. Experiment with colors, patterns, and shapes while ensuring the outfit is appropriate for the occasion.
  3. Pants: Choose tailored pants as the foundation of your outfit. For jeans, tread carefully, and opt for dark wash jeans if the occasion allows, pairing them with a classic blouse or shirt and heels.
  4. Jumpsuit: A longer, more tailored jumpsuit is suitable for a smart casual event. Pair it with heels, classy accessories, and a clutch for a sophisticated look.

Clothing Choices for Men:

  1. Blazer: A neatly tailored blazer is a great choice for a smart casual look. It adds a touch of formality without being too dressy.
  2. Shirts: Dress shirts are recommended, and chinos are a versatile option. The key is to look polished and put-together without the need for a full suit.

General Tips:

  1. Avoid Extremes: Whether for men or women, the overarching theme is to avoid extremes. Don't go too casual with beachside attire, nor too formal with ball gowns or tuxedos.
  2. Experiment with Accessories: Accessories can elevate your smart casual look. Classy accessories, heels, and a clutch can add sophistication to an outfit.

In conclusion, decoding the smart casual dress code involves striking a balance between formality and informality, choosing clothing that is polished and put-together while avoiding extremes. It's about expressing personal style within the boundaries of the occasion's dress expectations.
