Can you wear braces with belt loops? ›

Is it wrong to wear braces (sometimes known as suspenders in America) when the trousers have belt loops? The simple answer is no, it is not a major faux pas to wear braces when the trousers have belt loops.

Belt OR Suspenders...

It's an unwritten rule that you should never wear suspenders and a belt together in the same outfit. Whether it's a suit or casual outfit, you should choose one or the other, not both. This is because suspenders serve the same purpose as a belt, and visa-versa.

If your trousers have belt loops and no buttons, you can still wear a pair of suspenders, just make sure you choose a pair that clips on. While slightly less elegant, clip suspenders can be affixed to the waist of your pants with ease. Suspenders can be worn with pretty much any kind of trousers.

Belts simply aren't as adjustable and a good fit as braces. Braces are easy to find the right size in and are still very easily adjustable if need be. This means no poking holes, or stretching out of the belt.

Those stringy belt loops on the sides of your dress are making it look cheap AF. Those loops are really there so that stores have a way to display the belt on the garment when it is on the hanger. Otherwise it would get lost or you might think it was a scarf or something. SOLUTION: Cut them off.

If you'd like to convert your trouser waistband from belt loops to side adjusters, it is possible. Some tailors are able to remove the belt loops for you, using spare fabric from the trouser hem to create side adjusters, but only if there is enough fabric.

Reasons to not wear a belt with a suit

You'd prefer a cleaner look that isn't bisected in the center by a belt. You plan to wear your suit more formally, and/or in more formal occasions. You're not in the market for a suit at all, but rather a tuxedo—which should never have belt loops.

Because of the brackets and wires, getting hit in the face while wearing braces can cause even more damage to the soft tissues of the mouth (i.e., cheeks, tongue and lips) or result in an opposing player getting cut if the blow is from their elbow or hand. Plus, blunt trauma often leads to broken brackets.

While brace wearers can participate in most any sport, there are a few exceptions, such as boxing and wrestling, they should not partake in since the risk of getting hit in the mouth is so high.
