Description

Physical description

Orange wool beret with a black leather headband. The East German 'hammer and compass' insignia is worn within a double-spray of oakleaves, worked in coloured threads, and to the left of this badge is a stylised parachute of white thread.

History note

Post-1976 East German paratrooper's beret. East Germany's only parachute-deployed force was 40. ('Willi Sängar') Fallschirmjäger Bataillon, a lightly-equipped formation trained mainly as a raiding force to be deployed in the rear of any enemy. The distinctive orange beret ('Baskenmutze') differed from the universal maroon headdress conventionally adopted by many of the world's airborne forces, it is said, on account of the orange coloured caps worn during a peasant uprising in 15th century Germany. As was the tradition, collar patches, epaulettes and other uniform items were faced with the same orange arm-of-service colour. Initially NVA paratroops wore a grey beret for all forms of dress but later, with the adoption of the coloured baskenmutze, the grey was used for field service and the orange variant for walking out and ceremonial dress. Officers' berets featured the embroidered traditional insignia with oakleaves, whilst non-commissioned ranks wore just the circular co*ckade.
