Back to basics - neutrals for Autumns (2024)

As an Autumn, your palette is full of rich, vibrant shades which can look effortless casual or sophisticated and elegant. However, what you'll probably have noticed fairly on in proceedings, is that there is a distinct lack of 'traditional' neutrals - grey, navy and white.

However, picking out Autumn's neutrals is an art, and getting them right will mean that you can do minimalist style or colour pops as easily as any of the other seasons.

Autumns look great in pretty much every single shade of teal, and your best navy is actually a very dark teal rather than a true navy. Although many Autumns can and do compromise a little by wearing Winter's true navy, which harmonises well with all of the Autumn palette, your best look is always going to be that deep teal shade.

Autumn's version of white is rich cream.

Autumns suit every shade of light brown, from tan and camel through to cognac and beige, and they can be incredibly useful neutrals, particularly for warmer weather. Although Autumn often feels like quite a dark season, elegant beige and cream paired with mustard or coral makes for a pretty summer look.

Brown isn't such a fashionable neutral these days, but occasionally you can find this very dark bitter chocolate shade, almost a blackened brown, and it has just as much impact as black for Autumns, with none of the skin-deadening effects that Winter's dark neutral will have on you.

Autumn's greys are actually variations on the theme of taupe, from light pebble grey all the way through to deep mole.
