I began smoking a pipe when I had just enrolled in college. It was OK then to smoke in the classroom. I dropped it due to lack of training, until my father who was also a pipe smoker told me the "secrets" after I turned 21. Kept the habit on and on for ten years, and then quit tobacco altogether. Relapsed about 20 years ago. Aware that it is an offensive habit, I try to keep on the low side of one pipe a week but sometimes I binge.

Lots of folks smoke pipes. Today it's a hobby, not a habit. There are huge numbers of artisan pipe carvers creating beautiful work. Tobacco blends are very similar to the insurgence in craft beer and wines. Most, including myself, do not consider it "smoking", in the same way I don't consider myself an alcoholic because I have a beer once a week. It's not an addiction, but certainly appeals to collectors and those that want to explore an incredibly diverse variety of tastes and smells.
