Acrylic vs Cast Iron Tub: Which Is the Right Choice for You? - Plank and Pillow (1)

Choosing the right tub for your bathroom can be a difficult decision. There are so many options out there. But one of the first choices you have to make is an acrylic tub or cast iron tub?

The first question you might ask yourself is, which one is better? In our experience, one is not better than the other. Your decision should come down to what look you are going for and is your bathroom better suited for an acrylic tub or cast iron tub.

When we started planning for our master bathroom, there was one must have that was on the list: a black tub. I remember the day I put it out there on our Instagram Stories. So many people were choosing, “no way”. Then there was an inspiration picture that blew the socks off of everybody and completely changed their minds.

I then had several writing me saying they now wanted to change their vote to “black tub all the way!” Although we knew we wanted a black bathtub, we still weren’t sure what kind to choose. We started looking around and came across the perfect one from Signature Hardware. We chose the Kateryn Bateau Cast Iron Skirted Tub, and couldn’t be more pleased. We’re so glad we partnered with them on this tub!

This is an oval-shaped tub that was the matte black finish we were looking for. It fit the look and feel we were going for and knew it could look great combined with white walls, wood vanity, and beautiful tile.

Now, why did we choose cast iron? Well, mainly because of looks? Yes, you got it right, but I am going to say, I was definitely blown away with how solid the tub is and the finish is top-notch!

We actually had acrylic in our old home and loved it also. So, what would be the right choice for you, acrylic or cast iron? Now that we have experience with both, here is a little information on each that might help you decide.

Cast Iron Tub

If you want to be different, and add a great eye-catching piece to your bathroom, cast iron is the way to go! Cast iron tubs are more of a vintage, but timeless look. They do tend to be a bit pricier, but as I said, we were very impressed. To me, it is well worth the price.

Cast iron tubs come in a variety of color options including stainless steel. I even noticed a cool navy blue one from Signature Hardware.

Do keep in mind though, in order to install a cast iron tub in a particular area, you will want to make sure there is enough support for the weight.

Aside from appearance, water heat retention might be the second most important factor when deciding between cast iron and acrylic. After all, who wants to take a cold bath? In our experience so far, we haven’t noticed a huge difference between the two types of tubs. But according to science, a cast iron tub will keep your water warmer for a longer period of time. Iron is a better heat conductor than acrylic.

Acrylic Tub

Acrylic tubs are probably the most popular due to their lightweight material and affordability. It is a tub that doesn’t need any extra support and can easily be installed on any level of a home.

Being a previous owner of an acrylic tub, I found it to be very easy to clean. They come in a variety of styles from modern to more of a vintage look. Acrylic tubs are somewhat the norm when it comes to freestanding bathtubs.
