Hunter Boots

There is only one brand that dominates theworld of “wellies”. A brand thathas becomesynonymous with rain boots. A brand that after 150 years, onlycontinues to increase in popularity. That brand isHunter. The British based company was not always about making fashionable rain gear – they started out makingrubber boots for soldiers in the army. These purely functional boots eventually became fashionable when they were seen gracing the feet of somehigh profile women – Princess Diana and Kate Mossto name a few. Thanks to their practicality, classic design and impeccable quality, Hunter boots continue to soar in popularity across the world.

I love Hunter boots for both function and fashion. They’re comfortable, easy to wear and affordably priced. They’re also mynumber 1solutionfor all-weather footwear. These waterproof boots work just as well in the snow as they do the rain.I bought my first pair of Hunter boots about 4 years ago and am still wearing them today. There’s no doubt you’ll enjoy these boots for years to come – so the question is, what style should you buy? Hunter is famous for their Original boot – a design that has remained unchanged over the past 50+ years. To keep up with current trends, they’ve introduced new colors, finishes and a few new styles featuring modifications to the Original boot. I’m breaking down some of the decisions you’ll have to make when purchasing a pair of Hunter boots and giving you my best advice on how to choose. So here it is – A Guide to Buying Hunter Boots.

ORIGINAL versus REFINED

Due to its popularity, it’s likely you’ve seen theOriginalHunter boot or know what it looks like. The Refined style issimilar to theOriginal Hunter boot, with someslight modifications (improvements in my opinion.) The Original style is shorter (about 3″) and bulkier. The Refinedboot takestheclassic style and tailors it to create a taller and morepolishedsilhouette. One that is slimmer, sleeker and more chic – its sure to be flattering on anyone. The curve of the toe is also reduced for a less rounded look. It’s important to note this style also runs more narrow than the Original style.

GLOSSY versus MATTE

Both Original and Refined styles come inaglossormattefinishand bothare equally attractive. For me, the difference is in the maintenance. The first pair of Hunters I purchased were glossy. To my surprise that beautiful glossy finish deteriorated fairly quickly and my shiny new boots became dull within a matter of weeks. There are a few tips and tricks to keeping them glossy (Hunter sells a buffer spray and boot shiner), but unfortunately I don’t have the time for that! I personally prefer the more understated matte look and find them easier to care for.

TALLversus SHORT

Both the Original and Refined bootscome in tall and short styles. I own both and think they eachhave their advantages.Simply put, thetallaremore stylish and the short are more practical. The tall boots are more flattering and easy to style. They’ll also come in handyif you live in an area that gets a lot of snow. On the flips side, the shorter style is easier to put on and take off. The lighter and more compact design also makes them more portable and easier to carry around or travel with.It all depends on what you want them for. Keep in mind that depending on thestyle you choose, the boot could vary slightlyin height. The height also gets taller as you increase in size so refer to size charts.

SIZE UP versus SIZE DOWN: Hunterbootsare made in whole sizesonly. If you buy the Original style, size down (they run big). If you buy the Refined style (my preference) I suggestpurchasing your normal size or a 1/2 size up if you can. It’salways nice to have a little extra wiggle roomand theoption toline them with thick cozy socks. You’ll want that extra warmth when you’re wearing them in the snow! I’m a size 7.5 and ordered the 8.If you’re a whole size, stick to it.

I hope my Guide To Buying Hunter Boots will help in the decision making process. You can purchase your boots from Hunter, Zappos or Nordstrom. All retailers have great return/exchange policies and a wide selection to choose from. I’ve linked both the Original and the Refined styles in my Shop the Post section below so you can compare and choose! As an avid enthusiast and expert in the realm of footwear, particularly rain boots, I bring a wealth of firsthand experience and knowledge to guide you through the intricacies of selecting the perfect pair of Hunter Boots. With a keen eye for both function and fashion, I have not only delved into the history of Hunter as a brand but have also personally tested and embraced the various styles and features that make these boots a timeless choice.

First and foremost, let's explore the historical roots of Hunter Boots. Originating as utilitarian rubber boots for soldiers in the army, they have evolved into a fashion icon with a legacy spanning 150 years. The brand gained prominence when high-profile women such as Princess Diana and Kate Moss were spotted donning these boots, turning them from purely functional to undeniably fashionable.

The enduring popularity of Hunter Boots can be attributed to their practicality, classic design, and impeccable quality. Having worn my first pair for over four years, I can attest to their comfort, durability, and affordability, making them my go-to solution for all-weather footwear. These waterproof wonders seamlessly transition from rain to snow, offering versatility that stands the test of time.

Now, let's dive into the nuances of choosing the right style of Hunter Boots:

  1. Original vs. Refined: The iconic Original Hunter boot, with a design unchanged for over 50 years, faces competition from the Refined style. The Refined boot maintains the classic style but with improvements, presenting a taller, more polished silhouette. Notably, it is slimmer, sleeker, and more chic, catering to those who prefer a modern look. The curve of the toe is reduced for a less rounded appearance, and the style runs more narrow than the Original, adding a touch of sophistication.

  2. Glossy vs. Matte: Both the Original and Refined styles are available in glossy or matte finishes, each with its unique appeal. Drawing from personal experience, I find the matte finish to be more understated and easier to maintain. While glossy boots exude a beautiful sheen initially, they may require additional care to preserve their luster over time.

  3. Tall vs. Short: The decision between tall and short boots boils down to style versus practicality. Tall boots are deemed more stylish and easier to style, making them ideal for snowy regions. On the other hand, short boots offer convenience with easier wear and portability. Depending on your needs and preferences, you can choose the height that aligns with your lifestyle.

  4. Size Up vs. Size Down: Hunter boots are crafted in whole sizes only, introducing the dilemma of whether to size up or down. For the Original style, sizing down is recommended as they tend to run large. In contrast, the Refined style, my personal preference, can be purchased in your normal size or half a size up for extra room—especially beneficial for layering with thick socks during snowy conditions.

Armed with this comprehensive guide, you are now well-equipped to make an informed decision when purchasing your Hunter Boots. Whether you opt for the timeless Original or the refined silhouette, glossy or matte, tall or short, ensure the size aligns with your preferences for the ultimate combination of style and functionality. Happy boot shopping!
