To invest has generally been a financial term meaning: to expend money with the expectation of achieving a profit or material result.
But what does it mean to invest in your marriage?
Whenever you “invest” in something, it means you devote time, money, energy and/or emotion into it with the expectation of achieving a specific result.
The same things apply when you invest in your marriage.
Time, money, energy and emotion are the four key components to both the 6 Pillars of Intimacy and ultimately creating your own extraordinary marriage.
You need the investment of all of these to get a result.
Here’s the thing about time, money, energy and emotion. They all require you to be intentional. Why? Those things don’t “just happen”, you have to have conversations, you have to make the choice to make the investment together.
But what does it look like to invest time, money, energy and emotion?
First, you need to take that first step.
It’s kind of ironic how often couples are willing to talk about their investments when it comes to finances and yet that same conversation seems almost non-existent when it comes to marriage.
The act of investing in your marriage is a gift to yourself and your spouse. When you give that gift you can expect a return on your investment. You will grow and as a result you will change how you show up in the marriage.
When you do that, you change the environment in your home. In a different environment, your spouse has the opportunity to change how they respond as well.
You may also find that you:
- Realize how to better understand your communication differences
- Realize how to become teammates on the same team
- Learn what each of you fear most
- Have a breakthrough around your finances
- Start dating again and having fun
- Get a plan for sex
With all of those things, you will also find that you are able to work through areas that you needed to let go and forgive.
After you spend a few hours investing in yourselves and your marriage, you’ll quickly discover what could be. It’s incredible what happens when you get intentional and take action.
