Hey guys! Happy Monday! Alright let’s talk weather, y’all. Anyone else experiencing unseasonably warm temps? It was freaking 95 degrees yesterday here in Dallas. How crazy is that? My sister and I tried to do our long run – 9 miles – and it was brutal. We ended up walk/running the 9 miles instead because the heat was just too much. I am under no illusion that weather is unpredictable in Dallas and usually warmer than most places, but this gal is over the heat. Is it too much to ask for to get some cool temps so we can wear our Fall clothes? Haha.

Truthfully, I do think our temps are dropping this week so you can bet your bum I’ll be wearing all the sweaters and all the coats – this coat included! If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m a big fan of Chicwish. They do such a great job of finding pieces that are well-made, on-trend, and affordable. This blush oversized coat is from there and it’s been so fun to style. I truly cannot wait until I get to style it again.

Coats are hard though, especially oversized coats. They may be easier to wear if you’re 5’10,” but for shorties like me (5’2″), they can easily swallow you up. And truth be told, I haven’t really purchased an oversized coat for that very reason until this year. I always felt like they just swallowed up my figure and made me look bigger and squattier than I really am. But have no fear, I have finally figured out a way to wear an oversized coat and still look slender!

3 SLIMMING TIPS:

  1. FORM FITTING CLOTHING – Whether you’re wearing a dress or pants and a sweater, wear form-fitting clothing underneath your jacket so that when it moves as you walk, people get a glimpse of your beautiful figure!
  2. MONOCHROMATIC CLOTHING – go for monochromatic clothing underneath to elongate and slim your figure. This neutrals or black.
  3. LEAVE UNBUTTONED – rather than button up your coat, leave it open. This lets your silhouette be seen and the oversized, unbuttoned coat will accentuate your figure!

PS – Be sure to check out this velvet duster I posted about a couple weeks back that is now on major sale!

How do you make an oversized jacket smaller? ›

Resizing an oversized coat can be done in a few different ways. The easiest way is to take it to a tailor or seamstress and have them take in the sides and sleeves. This can be done by removing the existing seams and stitching them back together at a smaller size.

How do you look good in an oversized coat? ›

It's Too Big

To make a wool coat smaller, the tailor will open the coat's lining in the side seams or the bottom. The coat will be turned inside out and buttoned up. It will be pinned to your measurements then new seams will be sewed to fit you perfectly.

Can you alter a coat to make it smaller? ›

Most outerwear can have alterations performed. However, there are some exceptions. Any jacket or coat with a down-filled interior (puffers, ski jackets, or parkas) is very difficult to alter. However, this type of outerwear can have repairs completed on its exterior (buttons, zippers, and lining).

Stand in front of a mirror and look for signs that the fit isn't right. If the sleeves don't cover your wrists and the bottom of the coat rides up — like the image on the left — the coat is too small. What size should I get for an oversized coat? ›

I wouldn't recommend just grabbing any coat and going up a size or two. True oversize coats will be labeled "oversize" clearly on their product name when you shop online (or on the tag if you're shopping in person) and are made this way intentionally, so you should take your normal size.

How many sizes down can a jacket be altered? ›

You can generally alter trousers and shirts down by as much as two sizes. Suit jacket alterations are much more involved, making only one size down a realistic endeavor. Sometimes you're simply better off buying new.

However, it's not major surgery to cinch (“take in”) the sides, waist, chest, and arms (more on these alterations later). The rule of thumb is that you can go down two sizes at a maximum, but a suit jacket or blazer, only one size too large, is a safer option.
